Netflix’s Freaks – You’re One Of Us Review: Superheroes Who Lose Their Charm Real Quick!

Freaks – You’re One Of Us premiered on 2nd September 2020 on Netflix. Directed by Felix Binder, the movie stars Finnlay Berger, Cornelia Gröschel, Thelma Buabeng, Nina Kunzendorf, Ralph Herforth, Frederic Linkemann, Tim Oliver Schultz, Wotan Wilke Möhring and Gisa Flake.

“Wendy (Cornelia Gröschel), a young working-class mom, realizes that years of medication have suppressed her latent supernatural powers. She meets a stranger, Marek (Wotan Wilke Möhring), with the same background, and finds out that her co-worker, Elmar (Tim Oliver Schultz), is also similarly gifted. Question is: what will she do with her new powers?” – Netflix.

Superpowers? But How?

Netflix's Freaks - You're One Of Us Review: Superheroes Who Lose Their Charm Real Quick!

Freaks – You’re One Of Us follows a basic, yet interesting, premise where a few special people discover their superpowers and realize how the society tried to suppress them, not because they were bad people, but because they were always scared of them and their abilities.

The film is interesting and watch-worthy, yes, but it manages to leave you a tad bit unsatisfied and with some unanswered questions. The thing I couldn’t find or understand in the film is the origin of their power – Why are they superhumans? What caused this? But surprisingly, these aspects are completely shunned from the film.

Freaks- You're One Of Us

The movie has nothing exactly new to it. However, in other superhero movies, atleast the person with the power knows about its origin and purpose – which is absent here. The most badass thing that you get to see in the whole movie is when Electro-Man turns the traffic lights off, which causes a series of accidents – and that’s about it. The rest of Freaks – You’re One Of Us is pretty tame with not much action or mind-blowing villains.

With the variety of such shows/movies that have released in recent times, Freaks – You’re One Of Us sets the bar very low for itself. With a cast that is capable of pulling off much more than that they were given, the movie seems like a lazy attempt at showing something that required a lot more imagination and hard work.

Stream It or Skip It

Freaks- You're One Of Us

SKIP IT! The movie doesn’t add anything in the superhero genre. However, if you need something to watch with little kids, then this is the perfect movie to watch. The movie is a light watch overall and is good if you’re not expecting much!

SUMMARY

Freaks - You're One Of Us is Netflix's newest addition to the superhero genre that adds nothing new or innovative to it. It's a bland attempt at creating something and seriously lacks imagination.

  1. You didn’t like that they left the origin of superpowers mysterious? That was the only really great thing about the movie. Your need to have your hand held and have everything is explained to you is why so many movies are boring.
