As an avid David Letterman enthusiast, I have seen the man indulge in all sorts of conversation, with an extreme variety of individuals. Even though I belong to the YouTube generation of Letterman, there is not a single time when it felt like that the veteran maestro of conversations, hasn’t done this before. But with this important episode, Dave himself states, “I have never done anything like this”.
The episode starts with David Letterman arriving in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, along with his team of staffers to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During one of his stops, he also greets a young woman at the train station, who relays her thoughts and prayers for Zelenskyy, which he promises to convey with the best of regards.
The conversation between the two takes place inside a subway station, categorised as the safest spot in Ukraine, amidst the possibilities of shelling and drone attacks. Furthermore, when they finally initiate the conversation, Zelensky expresses his thoughts on the ongoing war, Russian propaganda, the future outcome, and the utmost element of dignity, the truth.
There are many interruptions in this special chat episode, including the moving trains and the emergency sirens. Which just provides you with a fine context about the situation in Ukraine and the daily routines of its people. At one point, even Zelenskyy talks about the thing which the people have gotten used to, and how tragic the circumstances have been.
Apart from everything that needs to be addressed in this special, we also get a ray of hope in terms of comedy. Letterman makes sure to use the universal power of humour to connect with the undeterred spirit of the Ukrainians. And also performs a standup bit inside one of the underground locations.
Humour carries the strength to restore perseverance in hard times and reminds us of the humane feeling of hope. One such moment that’ll stay with me for a long time, will be Zelensky narrating a NATO-Russian Joke to Dave, at the near end of the special. The joke successfully drew laughs from the audience and created a surreal moment of hope.
