Ms Pat Y’all Wanna Hear Something Crazy?: A Dark Ride

This Netflix comedy special is not for the light-hearted and it surely will not gel well with you if you don’t know where comedian Patricia Williams comes from. For the ones who aren’t aware, our title character is a shining example of resilience, survival and courage. Patricia had a traumatic life growing up, from giving being sexually abused to giving birth to two children at the age of 14 and 15, respectively to selling crack and supporting herself and her children, the woman has been through hell and emerged as a hero.

There is a segment in the show where we are told that Patricia’s nephew Raymon wrote about Ms. Pat being a hero for his Black History Month essay in school and we couldn’t agree more. The stand-up comedian took her first gig in 2002 after being encouraged by her caseworker and there has been no looking back.

Pat takes all of her life’s struggles, problems and obstacles to present us with a dark comedy set. The humour is fluid in the show and Ms. Pat sure knows how to have the audience’s attention but it is the stories of her past that are recounted in this set that impress us with the hilarious nature in which they are presented and how our speaker had survived some real gloomy days.

Ms. Pat takes us through her parenting days to how she was parent-ed back in her days. She calls out on pretentious dog lovers and reflects on the unfortunate lip trends that are taking over the world. She takes us through her experience as a black kid and, her kids’ experience starting from five days in a juvenile detention centre to being baptized over a hundred times at local churches, Ms. Pat makes us laugh hard.

However, it would be safe to say that this act isn’t for everyone. If you are somebody who can see the redemptive arc dark humour creates in people’s lives who have been through a lot more than what one can imagine, this is definitely your cup of tea. But, for people who prefer to stick to knock-knock jokes instead of smiling at the beauty of how adversities and painful occurrences can shape a person and, laughing at it helps them recover, this show would be a strong pass.

Ms Pat Y’all Wanna Hear Something Crazy?: Final Verdict

As the title goes, Ms. Pat takes us through some really crazy anecdotes from her life. There are several unscripted moments during the filming of this set that made it to Netflix’s final cut that gives it just the candidness it needs. If you are a fan of dark comedy, you surely oughta check this one out.

  1. Ms Pat is a disgrace to the African Americans. Her use of the “N” word is teaching or children bad habits. The cursing is not needed. May have been her child hood but that does not make it right today.

  2. I respect her telling her story, and I realize it is not pretty! The same story can be told with the humor and realness, but does not need the profanity and the “N” word! If Ms.Pat or BET is not willing to do that, then stop complaining when “other” people disrespect us!

  3. The N word and cursing is alot, but I can understand being sexually abused starting from 12 years old, because I can relate. I was later sexually and physically abused from 1996 to 2003 at age 20 by Detective Bruce Roberson of LBPD after he approached me in uniform 3 times, begging to get to know me, begging to come to my home and later begging for sex, and he was well aware that I was sexually and physically abused as a child because he interrogated me. It’s so many evil lying people in the world.

  4. I had to see if Im the only one. I have been scratching my head trying to figure WHY WHY is Hollywood PUSHING this woman they way they are? I NEVER herd of her until today from Tamara Hall’s show and when I went to youtube to see, I WAS SADDENED.

  5. EXACTLY! I have never understood that level of ignorance. NO OTHER GROUP does this with words used to degrade them. We did it because WE WERE TOO LAZY to bury it and too much self-hate, and now WE CAN SAY IT BUT YOU CAN’T? If that’s not the DUMBEST THING, you have ever heard in your life!

  6. Didn’t know a noise in a certain pattern out of someone mouth(words) could bother someone so much. Is the taste of something next that’s offends people? She’s a comedian, some forms of comedy is pushing it to the edge and the line. Anyone who complains about her act is just absurd and ridiculous.
