Mrs Davis Episode 5 Recap and Review: Starring Betty Gilpin, Jake McDorman, Andy McQueen, Chris Diamantopoulos, Elizabeth Marvel, Tom Wlaschiha, Katja Herbers, Ely Henry, Jack Foley, Ben Chaplin, Sam Meader and Raphael Corkhill, alongside other cast members, this show is a new absurdist comedy from Peacock following a world where an algorithm is a widely beloved source of emotional support but Simone, a nun, works to bring it down.
This episode, titled “A Great Place to Drink to Gain Control of Your Drink”, is directed by Owen Harris and runs for 60 minutes. In this episode, Simone and Wiley return to the island to meet Arthur Schrodinger, the scientist we see at the beginning of the season, rescued from an isolated beach.
Mrs Davis Episode 5 Recap
In the last episode, we saw Clara and realised that she was not actually from 1300 at all, but instead, it was a commercial for a shoe made sometime in the near present. At least as near as it gets than the 1300s. This time, Wiley and Simone go in a boat to a remote island, where they will find Dr Arthur Schrodinger. Simone is conversing with Jay, her husband, while his restaurant is in shambles. However, the conversation swiftly moves away from Jay and goes to the present moment, where the duo is about to reach their destination.
When they arrive, the stranded man, whom we now know to be Dr Arthur, comes at them with a sword, and Simone raises a healthy-looking tree bark in response. After a truce, they all sit down and introduce each other. Before she became a nun, Simone’s name was Elizabeth Abbott, and the doctor instantly recognised that. He believes that the fact that they are here is fate or some other kind of universal sign that they were supposed to meet.
In order to give all context, Arthur takes the viewers and our faithful characters Simone and Wiley back to the 80s when Clara was but a child. She had let herself into the council room of the Sisterhood of the Coin and was now forced to take up their vows and training. Otherwise, Mathilde, her mother, who also threatened Simone, would have had to kill her daughter. The training begins, but Mathilde doesn’t care for her daughter or the attention she gets from her apron man.

Instead, she moved the apron man to the Vatican (Father Hans Ziegler) and her daughter to the sidelines so she could protect the Holy Grail. Also referred to as The Asset, the Grail must always be kept moving, or it emits a foul odour. This is just one of the many rules of the cup, the most sacred being, “Thou Shalt Not Sip.” Clara has no respect for these rules, and for a good reason. After the commercial horribly backfires on the Sisterhood, Clara switches out the Grail for a decoy and seeks out Dr Arthur, they realise that these rules are mostly bogus.
We later learn that this man is her father, and the two went on adventures together for about ten years before he was stranded on this island. These adventures were important because Clara wanted to destroy the Grail so the Sisterhood would dissolve and do better things with their lives. But the Grail was absolutely indestructible, and all their efforts were almost about to go to waste until Clara suggested that they drink from the cup to see what would happen. Cue the most emotional music because Clara lies and cheats to ensure her father doesn’t drink from it.
When she does drink from the cup, she goes somewhere far away and what can only be assumed to be Jay’s place. After this moment of peace, her head explodes, leaving behind Dr Arthur in a conundrum. He found out, though, that there is a method to this drinking-from-the-cup madness. When a mouse drank water from the cup, it died, but when the cat ate the mouse, it was rendered immune and surprisingly spry for its age.

But Clara’s death was not for nought. Because her liver was transplanted in Wiley and Simone, that is the whole reason the doctor was looking for them in the first place. Wiley is totally baffled by the way this story ended and is clearly against helping this man by drinking from the cup. Simone is ready to take it on, though. Whatever it takes.
Mrs Davis Episode 5 Review
Last time, the writer had expressed that they would be utterly disappointed if the following episodes didn’t deliver on the same promise. Well, folks, the story managed to get more mangled and crazy, and it is exactly the kind that makes viewers go ‘AHA’ in the best way possible. The suspension of disbelief was restrained in this one, fully acknowledging the audacity of the story and the presence of the magnanimous, larger-than-life narrative.
The comically serendipitous way this show is written has created such a ripe ground for humour, one that especially pokes fun at the genre and the commonly used tropes in storytelling. And so, the end product is then simultaneously hilarious and poignant. If there were any doubt that this show was slowing down, this episode proves that the fun has only just begun. Convoluted plot points and all.
