My Name is Mo’Nique Synopsis

In this special Mo’Nique delves deep into her formative experiences, the ones that make her who she is now. Her life may all be televised for everyone to see, but this special is an explicit look into her family, her friendships and her grit growing up around strong Black women. When she enters the stage, the crowd goes wild. They are cheering and welcoming her with all the love that can be put into one room.

A still from the special

As a disclaimer, she shares that after this night, they will find out who Mo’Nique is actually and what are the things that make her who she is. Every decision of hers is about to make complete sense the moment they get to the end of this special. It begins with her sharing a story about her grandmother and the idea of fellatio. The provocativeness has come through even in the way her family members interact with her. They’re open and honest, but when her grandmother asks her not to do it at all, that is the last she ever has a conversation about this.

Her grandmother definitely gave her some mad imaginations of the perils of fellatio. But the bold streak doesn’t just end there. In another snippet of a story, Mo’Nique shares how she absolutely cannot stand a bully. In this story, she begins by addressing that the teacher was white and not just white but white-white.

Since most people weren’t clear about white-white was, there were some serious laughs at the end of this segment. This is just a small peek behind the curtain that will be dropping soon on Netflix. She seems exuberant, chill and ready to make the stage vibrate under her feet. And if that wasn’t enough, she can also be seen using her expressive face to tell a wonderful story through that.

Women have just started to make their rounds in comedy and have been seizing that opportunity since then. With Taylor Tomlinson, Ali Wong, Sommore and many more getting the clout they deserve, this special is an addition to that cause.
