MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 30 is titled ‘Unexpected Swap’ and the synopsis reads – The chefs put the home cooks to the test with a challenging twist in the elimination round. Can they rise to the occasion and prove their culinary prowess?
The judges of the show include Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar, who are joined by Garima Arora, the first-ever female chef to be a judge on the show. The cooking competition show is a nationwide quest to find the best ‘home cook’ and draws out some of the most brilliant chefs from across India. The judges sample recipes from various cuisines that the contestants prepare in their search for India’s ‘MasterChef’. The show is produced by Endemol Shine India and it is directed by Neeraj Shetty.

Episode 30 brings another black apron pressure challenge for the home chefs who failed to impress the judges throughout the week and will now have to compete with each other for a spot on the show. In the last elimination challenges they usually had to imitate the dishes made by judges or a guest but today they will be making something of their own.

After today’s challenge the top 10 home cooks will be finalised, therefore keeping that in mind, the challenge for today is to make a dish that showcases the contestant’s journey on the plate. The dish should celebrate their journey so far. They were given 60 minutes to cook and 5 minutes in the pantry.
As soon as the cooks got all the ingredients they needed from the pantry, they were given another surprise – the judges told them to swap the baskets with each other. It means that they will now have to create a dish from the ingredients that the other contestant might have picked for themselves.
Sachin got Suvarna’s basket which had all the ingredients for a Maharashtrian dish, while she got Priya’s basket which only had ingredients for a vegan dish. Priya got Nazia’s basket which had meat-based protein products but she decided to use only plant-based ingredients from it. Lastly, Nazia got Sachin’s basket which consisted of ingredients for a fruity dessert with mango and strawberries.
They weren’t given extra time to think and ideate, nor they could discuss with others to get an idea of what they were thinking of making. So they had to cook and think at the same time, even when the judges asked them what they were cooking, many were unsure if they will be actually making it or not. And even the ideas were called very simple and plain by the judges.
Taking the judge’s comments in mind, many changed their plans and decided to take some risks, rather than play safe. After the time was up, Sachin was called upon first, who made a dal tortilla taco with paneer stuffing, apple & onion salad, along with fried moong dal sprinkled on it. The judges found the stuffed tortilla dry and uncooked and even his mayo sauce had split up. However, the overall flavours together saved his dish.
The second contestant was Suvarna who made a polenta savoury cake. It had an herbs and garlic base with layers of mashed carrots, avocado and sweet potato, put together with garlic and chilli chutney. On the top, she had put on orange with chilli seasoning as well. The judges loved everything about the dish from the idea to the taste. So much so, she was asked to go and join the other safe contestants upstairs.
Followed by Nazia who made vanilla sponge cake with strawberry cream and gel with hazelnut and schezwan pepper sprinkled on it. The judges really liked the strawberry gel sheet but the dish lacked finesse and a balance in the flavours. Lastly, Priya made arborio rice risotto with lentil soup and spicy red chutney.
The judges were disappointed with her dish instantly, they commented that in the sixth week, they don’t expect to get dal chawal on the plate when she had enough ingredients to make something more. The dish lacked details and needed more elements, although the taste was alright. They expected a celebration of her journey and the vegan food but it didn’t reflect on the plate.

From the remaining contestants, Nazia and Sachin were announced safe, while Priya was eliminated from the competition. Apart from that, Suvarna’s polenta savoury cake was named the dish of the day & Aruna’s black carrot cake was called the dish of the week.
In today’s eliminations, the contestants competing for safety had it coming for them, after performing poorly throughout the week. However, today, Suvarna’s dish was a creative endeavour that brought out her strengths, which lie in the flavours of her dish. Meanwhile, the contestants who couldn’t flourish under pressure got negative remarks.
The remaining top 10 contestants are – Aruna, Suvarna, Gurkirat, Priyanka, Nayanjyoti, Deepa, Kamaldeep, Sachin, Santa and Nazia. So far, the performances of the contestants have been subpar but now that we are moving towards the end of the season, hopefully, something more creative and new will come out.
