MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 22 Review: Precise, Perfect and Nutritious Bento Box Challenge

MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 22 is titled ‘Precision And Perfection’ and the synopsis reads, “The home cooks are tasked with making a traditional Japanese ‘Bento’ in their own style. Will the home cooks manage to impress the chefs?”

The judges of the show include Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar, who are joined by Garima Arora, the first-ever female chef to be a judge on the show. The cooking competition show is a nationwide quest to find the best ‘home cook’ and draws out some of the most brilliant chefs from across India. The judges sample recipes from various cuisines that the contestants prepare in their search for India’s ‘MasterChef’. The show is produced by Endemol Shine India and it is directed by Neeraj Shetty.

In today’s episode, the home cooks are met with judges who are busy cooking. Or rather, Chef Ranveer Brar is cooking up something while the other two are looking at his perfect skills. It is revealed to be a Japanese bento box whose Indian equivalent will be a tiffin/lunch box. If you have been on the internet enough, then you must have come across some really cute bento boxes ranging from animated characters to aesthetic colour combinations etc.

The challenge for today is the same. The contestants have to make a traditional Japanese bento box but in their own way which should be trending and interesting. The bento created by the chef included dishes like rice balls, prawn tempura, spinach and seaweed salad, pickle, stir-fried veggies etc. The cooks also have to make at least 5 dishes that will fill up the bento box.

They are given 60 minutes with 5 minutes in the pantry, which will remain closed otherwise. Along with it, there is also a twist which was revealed after half an hour, while cooking. The parameters for judging the boxes will be Precision, perfection as well as nutrition. The one who will check all the boxes will join Gurkirat in the safe gallery.

While cooking, the judges went around to ask what the contestants were cooking and even gave valuable tips, when necessary. After 30 minutes, it was revealed that they will only be tasting 6 bento boxes today, which means the other boxes will be eliminated on the basis of their presentation.

After looking at all the bento boxes made by the home cooks the judges selected Suvarna, Nayanjyoti, Santa, Deepa, Nazia and Aruna. Meanwhile, Priya was told off by the judges for not even completing the dish as there were only 2 elements in the box, despite several time reminders by the judges and after being on the show for 5 weeks, this is not acceptable by the contestants.

Suvarna’s bento box had steamed rice rolls with deep-fried prawns coated in a crispy sweet potato layer, stir-fried veggies like corn, asparagus & Brussel sprouts. She was complimented for her innovation with the sweet potato prawn and presentation. Next Nayanjoti made onigiri filled with chicken and pickle, Gyoza, fried prawns, boiled egg and stir fry veggies.

The judges complimented him for the perfectly soft-boiled egg and the consistency of his sticky rice. But the dish lacked a dip. Followed by Santa who made blue pea rice sushi, fruit salad, Brussel sprouts pickles and stir fry veggies. Similarly, her dish also lacked a dip and the seasoning was not right due to the use of different vinegar.

Next Deepa presented her dish with king oyster mushroom steak, onigiri, chicken, salad and veggies. The judges especially liked how she transformed the mushroom and the dish reflected her creativity, which would be acknowledged by any chef. As well as the flavours were on point. Followed by Nazia who also used blue pea rice in her sushi but to give a gradient effect and made grilled prawns with teriyaki sauce etc.

The judges thought that the dish lacked details that should be taken care of – like how to use skewers and the seasoning was on the low end as well. Lastly, Aruna presented her dish with much hesitation as she hasn’t made any Japanese food before. She made fried rice with gyoza that had a mushroom filling and stir fry veggies. The judges liked her attempt with gyoza but it lacked the nutrition part with less protein.

Final Thoughts: MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 22

The episode ended with Deepa being chosen as the dish of the day and getting safe for the week. But along with her, the judges thought there was someone else that deserved the second dish of the day and that was Suvarna. This means she got to wear the white apron again and be safe from elimination for now.

Well, as I said in the last review Suvarna would become safe since she was seen in the white apron in the preview. Apart, from it, I feel today’s challenge was definitely not meant for MasterChef India where most of the people have not tasted, how all the dishes that they are making are supposed to taste/look like. Then how will creativity or innovation come out when you don’t even know the basics?

The contestants are not going to go and work in the pan Asian restaurants or something, they should be tested on something they at least have an idea about and are confident in cooking. Also, why have they chosen such a hideous-looking bento which shines more than the dishes put in it. Either it should have been completely black or tone down their light setting so the plastic doesn’t shine so much.

MasterChef India Season 7 is currently streaming on SonyLIV and a new episode is released from Monday to Friday at 9 PM.
