Mandala Murders Review

Netflix India isn’t usually the best place to get good fictional mysteries, but I guess Mandala Murders, the streaming service’s newest release, has its moments and, thankfully, doesn’t play it safe with an outlandish idea. Going all in is the only choice in this case, and that’s exactly what we do here. The series has 8 episodes, and its 40-minute episodes are perfect to binge. If you love watching something crazy that will make you think a bit, then this is the place to be.

The series starts off with a shocking murder, and it paves the way for what to expect in the upcoming episodes. It gives a bit of Ek Thi Daayan vibe, and the mix of mystery and social issues makes you look forward to what is coming next. See, this isn’t some mystery thriller series based on reality. This is a cult story about fanatics that is not realistic in any way. But still, the series holds on to its logic fairly well and does a good job of going from one set of situations to another.

Mandala Murders isn’t going to be for everyone, and that’s fine. If you’re a fantasy lover, this one might be up your alley as a great one-time watch. The series delivers some good twists and turns, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ending twist because I really didn’t expect it. It was quite fun to watch it all unravel. However, the problem with this series is that it’s very expansive and sometimes can get very tiring. The steady stream of murders is fun, but it gets grotesque only a few times. At other times, things can get slow and meandering.

The other problem I had with the series is that there is very little chemistry among the different characters. Vaani Kapoor’s Rea feels disjointed from the rest of the characters, and there’s no feeling of camaraderie among them. Suvreen Chawla, as usual, is fantastic, and I liked Vaibhav Raj Gupta as well. However, I will say that I think the series lacks some amount of depth. There are also quite a few action sequences, but they are terribly done, and I hated every bit of them. It’s like watching people flying around on cables; none of it seemed real in any way.

That being said, the film has some good tension at times, and I liked the lore. The wardrobe, the cinematography and the score are good as well and create good tension. The sets are fantastic, although the machine looks a bit silly. Either way, it’s a lukewarm watch that I enjoyed quite a bit.

Mandala Murders knows what it is and tells its tale accordingly. It’s not a terrible show, but it’s not fantastic either. However, considering Netflix India’s recent track record, I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy thrillers surrounding the occult. It’s amusing, if nothing else.
