Mahabharat Murders is a Bengali TV series directed by Soumik Haldar and stars Priyanka Sarkar, Arjun Chakrabarty, Saswata Chatterjee, Rishav Basu, Kaushik Sen, Rajdeep Gupta, and Debasish Mondal. The series has 12 episodes and three episodes will release every week till June 3 and the episodes have a runtime of around 25 minutes each. It is based on the novel of the same name by Arnab Ray.
Hoichoi describes the series as:
A serial killer perceives himself as the modern-day Duryodhan and viciously kills the people he perceives as the Pandavas. Investigating officers Ruksana and Siddhartha encounter several twists and turns in this 21st century Kurukshetra to uncover the mastermind behind this gruesome game of revenge.
– Mahabharat Murders review does not contain spoilers –
Mahabharat Murders has an interesting concept – a modern-day Duryodhan goes out to murder the Pandavas in order to exact revenge. Officers Ruksana and Siddhartha are out to stop this Kurukshetra. Sounds absolutely delicious, doesn’t it? The first three episodes of the series that were released today are full of mystery and intrigue. For those who haven’t read the novel, this is going to prove to be an interesting watch. The episodes are short enough to be enjoyed and mysterious enough to be enjoyed thoroughly.

From the first murder to the first taste of the Mahabharat in those murders, you sit there wondering why someone would go to this length – what is their motive? Although Hoichoi has decided to not release the episodes together, the first three episodes have created an interesting mystery that will make you want to come back the next week.
Apart from the murders, Mahabharat Murders introduces drugs and something else as well. Revealing the latter would be a spoiler and will definitely take away from the confusion of watching the episodes but trust me when I say this – it’s wild. However, with what’s going on on-screen, it doesn’t feel too far-fetched. Ruksana and Siddharta, too, are somewhat fleshed on in these episodes. They feel like believable characters with conviction and a drive. Saswata Chatterjee as Pabitra Chatterjee is great as well, but then again, we have come to expect that from him.

My biggest gripe is with Rishav Basu’s character Vicky who appears to be doing drugs for the sake of doing drugs. His character feels cartoonishly evil and doesn’t come off as genuine. On top of that, most of the other characters all hilariously shoot cocaine as if to bring home the point that these aren’t good people. You can showcase people’s evil sides without drowning a character’s arm in white powder and making them snort it like that. Sometimes, a little subtlety goes a long way.
Speaking about subtlety, Mahabharat Murders does well with its subtle mystery. I am glad that the series doesn’t immediately give away key points of the thriller that shows these days mostly do. I don’t want to know who the killer is – it’s not thrilling to watch the police play catch and mouse with a killer whom we already know. The Hoichoi series holds its cards close to its chest, for the time being, making us want to come back next week to check out how the next Pandava will fall.
Summing up: Mahabharat Murders Part 1

The first three episodes of Mahabharat Murders are intriguing and build tension well. The murders are interesting and are presented in a way that will make you genuinely interested. If anything, after the third episode is done, you’d want to come back to check out what the next episodes hold for our detectives. Alas, we’ll have to wait for next week!
Mahabharat Murders is streaming on Hoichoi.
