Lost in Starlight Ending Explained
The film starts with Nan-young being given the decision that she will not be going on the Mars Expedition because visiting the site where he mother lost her life would be too cruel to her. Of course, she is devastated, but even though she denies it, she’s clearly still affected by her mother’s death.
At home, a sudden surprise results in her breaking her mother’s analogue record player and after some searching, she stumbles upon a vintage audio equipment store that is able to repair her cherished recorder. However, there, she comes across Jay, and the chance encounter sparks something between the two of them. After dropping off her record player, she continues to work on her research, still holding on to hope that if she makes a breakthrough, she will be allowed to lead the next Mars expedition.

Jay and Nan-young eventually meet up again to fix the player and become fast friends, falling for each other in the process. They share their dreams and desires, while Nan-young shares that they can’t get involved in the event that she is chosen to go to Mars. Of course, that doesn’t work for too long, and the two end up falling for each other soon.
One day, while opening up about her childhood to Jay, Nan-young makes a shocking discovery on a long-standing problem that she has been trying to solve. Meanwhile, Jay suffers from his own problems with not being able to play his music with his old band. When he is asked to join in on one of their sessions, he suffers from anxiety while on stage, thinking about everything that he has been through. While he mulls over whether or not he would like to return to playing music, Nan-young gets the fantastic news that she has been chosen to go to Mars.
However, she doesn’t tell Jay who gets to see her mother’s last video from Mars and the news one after another. He is left distraught, asking her not to go to Mars and stay with him. However, Nan-young refuses, having worked her whole life for one thing, and it is finally coming to fruition. After a terrible fight, Nan-young breaks up with Jay. However, on the day she is about to go to space, Jay has a change of heart and goes to meet Nan-young, spending the last precious hours together.

As Nan-young goes on her mission, Jay starts to run after his own dreams and dedicates time to his music while the two spend time together virtually. He finishes his song and even signs on with a label, planning to sing it on stage. Meanwhile, Nan-young lands on Mars.
Does Nan-young Come Back to Earth?
One day on Mars, Nan-young, while investigating the second expedition’s abandoned rover, finds organic markers around her and rushes to learn more. Without much thought, she goes into a crater after her robot goes in, while at HQ, her chief gets the news that a tornado signal has been detected on the eastern part of the Arcadia Plains. With the situation getting more and more dangerous, HQ tries to reestablish communication with Nan-young to no avail. However, when they do get a signal, it’s too late, and Nan-young falls off the cliff.

With only 10 minutes at hand, she makes her way to where the traces have been found and suddenly comes across a chamber in the middle of nowhere. Inside, she finds the trinket that she had made for her mother and videos of herself, along with the flowers that her mother was so proud of. Just before going unconscious, she looks up at her mother, smiling down on her.
