Liaison Episode 1 Recap

The first episode is titled Storm Warning, and it opens with two Syrian hackers, Salim and Wahid, causing an unauthorised data breach when suddenly they are chased down by the country’s intelligence team. However, they manage to escape and meet up with a French activist turned mercenary, Gabriel, who accepts the mission to withdraw the fugitives to a safer location. The mission fails as it is interrupted by a heavily armed group, and Gabriel is captured. Nevertheless, he is freed when it is revealed that he is not a government official.

Meanwhile, tensions in the U.K. rises as the sudden cyber-attack compromises their systems, but it is brushed off by the officials until there is another similar attack which confirms the suspicions. Alison, a competent Home Office employee, is entrusted with the task of finding the culprit by her superior. On the other hand, the French side is also seen in shambles as one of the officials desperately tries to get ahold of the hackers by outsourcing the task to Gabriel.

Gabriel sets out to retrieve the USB key from the hackers containing important information. He successfully steals the object and causes serious injury to Walid during the mission. But the USB is useless since it is password protected, and only Samir can unlock it. Gabriel’s next task will be to find Samir and retrieve the password.

Furthermore, the news about Walid’s injury quickly reaches British officials, and Gabriel’s image is also captured in the CCTV footage. Alison’s demeanour changes when his face appears on screen, which indicates that they might know each other. During the last few minutes of the episode, Gabriel appears outside Alison’s house, and they stare at each other through the window.

Liaison Episode 1 Review

The episode starts strong and sets the tone for the rest of the series. It displays the typical modern warfare that countries engage in from the comfort of their offices. From data breaches to internal conflicts, it contains every element to keep the audience engaged with the story. The creators have also done fairly well with building up the suspense, which will be revealed in later episodes. Different relationships among the characters are also explored to a certain level, both personal and professional.

Vincent Cassel and Eva Green’s enigmatic presence is bound to appeal to the viewers. Their mysterious yet familiar relationship manages to build enough excitement. Both the actors did a good job of providing an overview of the characters’ personalities. Most viewers have to rely on subtitles as more than half of the episode is in French.
