Netflix’s latest Japanese original series’ premise can be well caught on upon a mere glance at the title itself, which brings us to unravelling the Let’s Get Divorced ending sequence, and looking into what turn did Yui and Taishi’s marriage took eventually. Starring Riisa Naka as Yui Kurosawa and Tori Matsuzaka as Taishi Shoji, the new romantic comedy J-drama is directed by Fuminori Kaneko, Ryosuke Fukuda and Takuya Sakagami and co-written by Kankuro Kudo and Shizuka Oishi.
Also starring Ryo Nishikido, Yuka Itaya, Koji Yamamoto, Arata Furata, Reiko Takashima and others in significant roles, the series centres around the titular power couple surrounded on all sides by public opinions and eyes defining their relationship for them. Yui, an actress, and Taishi, a third-generation politician, are keen on ending their marriage that started off on a lovey-dovey heartwarming note, but ultimately morphed into something sour with the passage of time and their respective famed lifestyles.
People believe Taishi political career as a hand me down entity from his rather renowned and aspirational late father, he’s initially caught in the cycle of “half-assing” his way around his profession. Yui, on the other hand, seems to be steering a steady career in the entertainment industry as big shot actress whose image is built around her “perfect wife” persona. The same image helps hard carry Taishi’s campaign as he hopes to be elected as Ehime’s (Japan) mayor, leading him to feel incompetent on his own accord to build a strong case for his personality, and even more complications in married couple’s relationship
The on-and-off couple’s relationship has obviously been weighed down by the decisions and ideas of those around them, but they eventually rekindle their spark and plan on working through they issues. At a press conference, after both of their respective affairs are outed to the world, they again embark on accomplishing what’s told of them – to announce their divorce, which they originally wanted to do, but the whole world seemed to have been conspiring against their separation in the Let’s Get Divorced Netflix original series.

A bittersweet tension could be sensed between both of them, as it was clear that Yui and Taishi still had feelings for each other. However, when Taishi’s mother finally pushes them to part ways in order to save Taishi’s chance at being elected the mayor, the two partners feel more conflicted than ever to commit to the annulment.
Instead of going through with the plan at the press conference behind held to announce their divorce, they publicly announce that they’d give their marriage a second chance if Taishi ended up victorious in the elections. When he doesn’t, despite all the hard work put in by him and his team, the two finally seal the deal and file for their divorce.

In the meantime, we also discover that Yui is finally pregnant, after both her and Taishi having given this a try time and again. Even after the divorce, months later, when Yui conceives the child, Taishi is by her side to welcome his son, Yoji, in the world. On the flip side, with Sado having won the Ehime poll as well, despite Taishi’s deep love for the place and its people, he’s rendered unemployed.
Simultaneously, Yui, goes on to win top-rated international accolades, and her acting careers reaches newer heights. Taishi’s mother still pushes him to acquire his son’s custody, but even though that doesn’t work out for her, Yui often relies on her look after Yoji due to her hectic schedules. Taishi continues to be stuck in his lovesick situation for Yui, and regrets having failed their marriage upon having cheated on her in the first place.

Regardless of their separation, the two continue to stay on good terms, especially since they both equally care for their son, Yoji. Nevertheless, Taishi doesn’t give up the chance to get back together with Yui again, but she finally seems to have accepted the fate and moves on from their former marital resentments or even the love they shared initially.
A new electoral campaign era comes around, and Taishi runs for the same position as the previous period. As a controversy wraps around Soda’s neck, his chances of being elected achieve fruition, but this time he doesn’t feel as if Yui’s relevance has pushed him to the sidelines for his own campaign. Rightfully, earning his post, he also revived Yui’s support in the end, and regain his post back in the Congress. Charting on a new journey with a new mindset, Taishi stops taking things for granted, and actively contributes to his position as a politician, and the series ends on high for him professionally as his character development comes full circle.
As for the other secondary character who had been so long an unemployed artist, and mostly known as Yui’s ex-boyfriend, Kyoji, too, finds his professional calling as a journalist/ blogger covering elections.
