7 Kpop Groups with Zero Korean Members: BLACKSWAN, VCHA and Others

In the world of Kpop, the dominance of South Korean idols has been a given for decades. The genre, which is a cultural phenomenon in its homeland and increasingly so around the world, has traditionally been a space where Korean artists shine. However, the landscape is changing rapidly. Kpop groups with zero Korean members are emerging and making their mark on the global stage, representing a fascinating shift in the genre’s evolution and globalization. These groups are challenging the status quo and redefining what it means to be a K-pop idol. Let’s dive into the stories of these trailblazing groups and explore how they are making waves in the industry.

Traditionally, Kpop has been synonymous with South Korean idols who captivate audiences with their flawless choreography, catchy music, and striking visuals. But now, the genre is expanding its horizons, welcoming artists from diverse cultural backgrounds who are redefining what it means to be a Kpop star. These trailblazing groups are challenging the norms and bringing a fresh perspective to the industry. Let’s explore the stories of these pioneering groups and their impact on the K-pop landscape.

Note: While these groups might not be traditionally considered K-pop but their training under the Korean entertainment industry’s rigorous system and the adoption of K-pop’s distinctive music style, production quality, and performance standards justify their inclusion in the K-pop category.

Kpop Groups with Zero Korean Members

BLACKSWAN

BLACKSWAN holds the distinction of being the first K-pop girl group to debut without any Korean members. Formed by DR Music, this multinational group originally began as Rania in 2011, going through several name changes and line-up shifts before rebranding as BLACKSWAN in 2020. The current line-up—Fatou (Senegalese-Belgian), Gabi (Brazilian-German), Sriya (Indian), and NVee (American)—is a testament to the group’s global vision.

Their music is as diverse as its members, blending a variety of influences from around the world. Their latest comeback with Roll Up showcases a vibrant, genre-blending sound that has captivated fans across the globe. The song’s infectious beat and empowering lyrics highlight the group’s commitment to producing music that resonates beyond borders. The group’s journey is not just about breaking into the K-pop scene but also about proving that talent knows no nationality.

VCHA

The six-member girl group VCHA from JYP Entertainment and Republic Records, has made history as the first American group to be trained under the rigorous Kpop system. The group, composed of Lexi, Camila, Kendall, Savanna, KG, and Kaylee, was born out of the A2K (America2Korea) project, a survival show aimed at discovering new talent in the U.S.

Since their official debut in 2024 with Girls of the Year and XO Call Me, this group has been on a mission to bring Kpop’s polished aesthetics and addictive sound to an American audience. Their follow-up single, Only One, along with its B-side Favorite Girl, have further established them as a unique force in the industry. While their training and roots are in Korea, VCHA’s identity is distinctly American, making them a bridge between two of the world’s biggest music markets.

WayV

The sub-unit of the popular boy group NCT, WayV, is a six-member Chinese boy band that debuted in 2019 under SM Entertainment’s China-oriented label, Label V. The group—comprising Kun, Ten, Winwin, Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yangyang—has carved out a unique niche in the K-pop world by merging Chinese pop with K-pop’s signature style.

Their latest comeback with the 5th mini-album Give Me That, released simultaneously in both Chinese and Korean, showcases the group’s versatility and capability to connect with fans across linguistic and cultural divides. The album’s title track features a dynamic blend of powerful choreography and sleek production, further solidifying their status as a global powerhouse in the K-pop industry.

XG

XG (short for Xtraordinary Girls) is a seven-member girl group that is redefining what it means to be a K-pop act. With all members—Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Juria, Cocona, Maya, and Harvey—hailing from Japan, this group is a prime example of K-pop’s global reach. Despite their Japanese origins, the group is based in South Korea and trained under the same rigorous system that produces top Kpop idols.

XG made their debut in March 2022 with the single Tippy Toes, and their recent single WOKE UP, a track that became a viral sensation. Their music is primarily in English, further emphasizing their global aspirations. The group’s success lies in their ability to blend the high-energy performance style of Kpop with an international appeal, making them a standout act in an increasingly crowded market.

HORI7ON

HORI7ON is a Filipino K-pop boy band that brings a unique blend of K-pop and P-pop (Philippine pop) to the table. Formed through the ABS-CBN idol reality show “Dream Maker: The Search for the Next Global Pop Group,” HORI7ON consists of Vinci, Kim, Kyler, Reyster, Winston, Jeromy, and Marcus. Their debut album “Friend-SHIP,” featuring the lead single “SIX7EEN,” dropped in 2023, marking their official entry into the K-pop world.

HORI7ON’s music reflects their dual identity, combining the slick production and choreography typical of K-pop with the heartfelt lyricism and storytelling of P-pop. The group represents a new wave of K-pop, one that is increasingly inclusive of different cultures and musical traditions.

KATSEYE

KATSEYE, a girl group formed by HYBE Entertainment in collaboration with Geffen Records, is on a mission to take the “K” out of K-pop and make it truly global. The group, which was formed through the survival show “The Debut: Dream Academy,” consists of Manon, Sophia, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae. While Yoonchae is Korean, the group’s music is primarily in English, reflecting their global ambitions.

KATSEYE made their debut on June 28, 2024 with the digital single Debut, and have since released tracks like Touch and their first EP SIS (Soft Is Strong). Their music, which combines K-pop’s catchy melodies with a more global pop sensibility, has resonated with fans worldwide, proving that K-pop is no longer confined to its Korean roots.

NiziU

NiziU, a nine-member Japanese girl group under JYP Entertainment, made their debut in South Korea in December 2020. Formed through the Nizi Project, a survival audition program by JYP and Sony Music Entertainment, this group has quickly become one of the most popular groups in both Japan and South Korea.

With members Mako, Rio, Maya, Riku, Ayaka, Mayuka, Rima, Miihi, and Nina, this group is a perfect example of how K-pop can transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. Their debut single “Step and a Step” was a commercial success, and they have continued to release hit after hit, solidifying their place in the K-pop industry despite their all-Japanese line-up.
