Karan Johar introduces both his students, aka actors Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. The episode starts with the duo making jokes about how Karan is attacking married men. KJo reveals he saw a meme where Vicky and Katrina were running away from him.
Kjo says that the last time Varun and Sidharth were together, there was a third person sitting in the middle (Alia Bhatt). Varun jokes if he’s going to talk about Alia even this season. Kjo says he misses having Alia, as it would mean a reunion of the Student of the Year cast. Karan plays them a video message that the actor recorded specifically for them.
In the episode, Karan Johar reveals how both Sid and Varun were working with him as ADs during the filming of My Name is Khan. Both actors had steamy affairs with the girls from the sets, especially the costume department. Varun used to click pictures of SRK and sell them to girls just to impress them.
Karan asks the duo about their married life. He asks them about their bond with their in-laws. Both men seem to have a good bond with their wives’ families. They also seem to be happy being married and don’t miss their single life. There are discussions about their wedding, Sid-Kiara’s wedding pictures, and how Varun had a low-key wedding where only Karan was invited from the industry.
Like Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, we also learn about Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani’s first meeting. Fans might believe that they met on the sets of Shershaah. However, the first time they crossed paths was during the wrap-up party of Netflix’s Lust Stories.
One may think that just because Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan worked in SOTY together, they must be good friends. However, Karan asks them why they’re not close friends. Both the actors answered that life happened, and they both got busy in their careers. However, whenever they meet up at any party or function, they always bond well.
Like every episode, Koffee With Karan Season 8 Episode 5 had a new game for the duo called ‘Rat Race’. Karan would say something, and Varun and Sid would have to say three things related to it within six seconds. For example, Sidharth was asked ‘3 things that are done in the gym’, and Varun was asked ‘3 things he does with his wife Natasha’. The game was weird, but fun.
At the end comes the rapid-fire round, which is nothing like how the game used to be in the past. Both Sid and Varun are asked different questions. Even though Karan kept denying it, we agree that Sid was asked more (and better) questions. The audience voted for Sidharth, and he won his first Koffee Hamper.
Koffee With Karan Season 8 Episode 5 Review: Final Thoughts
Koffee With Karan Season 8 Episode 5 had only a few fun moments. There are too many marriage talks going on this season, making you wonder: is this season made for our parents’ generation? There’s no fire in the rapid-fire game. The show seems to have lost its spark. Varun’s high energy and Sidharth’s charm couldn’t keep you interested for a long time when the topics of the discussions were not so solid. Again, I don’t know if it’s the abrupt editing or limited time, but Karan keeps cutting off the guests. The conversations seem to start somewhere and end somewhere, with no proper flow.
