5 Fantasy Romance Kdramas

My Love From the Star (2013)

If an alien looked anything like Kim Soo-hyun’s Do Min-joon, a lot of people will have very different views about them!

The 2013 fantasy romance Kdrama has it all – two very competent protagonists, a swoon-worthy romance and some great character growth to boot. Add to that some impeccable fashion sense and you have a Korean drama worth the watch.

The story follows Do Min-joon, an outer space being who has been stranded on Earth for 4 centuries. Old and cynical, his entire perspective about life on earth changes when he finally meets Chun Song-yi, a stuck-up A-list actress, who thaws his cold heart and makes life better.

Episodes: 21
Stars: Jun Ji-hyun, Kim Soo-hyun, Park Hae-jin, Yoo In-na.

Goblin: The Lonely and the Great God (2016)

2016’s Goblin is not an unknown to those who love a good fantasy Kdrama and for good reason!

The show is about Kim Shin, a decorated military officer from the Goryeo Dynasty, who was cursed with immortality for the number of lives he took when he was alive. Now wandering the Earth without much hope, he uses his abilities to help people around him and searching for the Goblin Bride – the person who can take out the sword in his heart and set his soul free.

The series is adored for its characters, their interpersonal relationships and the storyline as a whole where all the different threads come together to make sense in the end. For anyone who wants a dose of fantasy this week after Kiss Sixth Sense, this famed Kdrama should be your next pick!

Episodes: 16
Starring: Gong Yoo, Lee Dong-wook, Kim Go-eun, Yoo In-na.

Hotel Del Luna (2019)

If you haven’t watched Hotel Del Luna yet, then you’re doing yourself a great disservice! This dreamy fantasy romance Kdrama is every bit as special and wholesome as your heart can want and you wouldn’t be able to have enough of it. Emotional, heartwarming and poignant at any given moment, the series features some great characters and arcs that  will make you sob from time to time!

The story follows the hotel’s ill-fated and perpetually annoyed CEO Jang Man-wol and how her listless existence charges for the better when she meets new manager Koo Chan-sung. If destiny is something you have questions about, then this Kdrama will answer all of those questions and then some more!

Also, Man-wol’s costumes and IU’s characterisation of the hotel owner is absolutely on-point and will stay with you long after the show is over. Additionally, look out for some really cool special appearances throughout the show!

Doom At Your Service (2021)

Last but definitely not least we have fan-favourite fantasy romance Kdrama Doom At Your Service that brings so much salt and sweet to the plate that you’ll be left reeling after the show is over!

Dong-gyung is rather unlucky and just got diagnosed with a brain tumour. With only hundred days to live, she frustratingly calls out for the destruction of the world. What she could never have predicted was that destruction himself would show up in front of her, asking her to end everything and everyone in existence. What follows are a couple of realisations, a doomed (I had to) loved story and a heartwarming finale.

Episodes: 16
Starring: Seo In-guk, Park Bo-young, Lee Soo-hyuk, Shin Do-hyun.
