Planning to Watch Kings of Joburg Season 2? Here’s a Recap of Everything That Happened in Season 1

The South African Fantasy Action series Kings of Joburg is coming back with its season 2. But before watching the next season’s feisty plot, we’ve brought you a quick recap to refresh your memories of the Masire brothers and their family curse. Directed by Shona Ferguson, the series bags 6 episodes, each ranging from 50 to 65 minutes. The series is shot in South Africa in Johannesburg and is available in English, featuring the Zulu language.

The series’ main cast includes Shona Ferguson, Zolisa Xaluva, Sello Sebotsane, Buhle Samuels, Tk Sebothoma, Nnekwa Tsajwa, and Connie Ferguson Tsholofelo Matshaba, Cindy Mahlangu, Edmund Ngema, Abdul Khoza, Sthembiso Khoza, Busiswe Twala and Thembi Seete. There are also other eminent supporting roles in season 1, and more might be added in season 2.

The official Netflix description of the series reads,

The Masire brothers rule Johannesburg’s criminal underworld, but a supernatural family curse and a tangled web of betrayal threaten to destroy them.

The first episode shows Mogomosit Masire, aka Mo, being released from prison after serving 10 years for a heist crime he committed along with his elder brother Simon Masire and their partners Ayande and Menzi. It is understood that Simon and the partners abandoned Mo after he sacrificed by surrendering to the police. On the other hand, Simon also falls in love with Mo’s wife, Angela, and they get married, sharing Mo’s son, Tlotlo. However, Simon has his own family, a wife and a son.

When Mo returns to Jo’burg, everyone fears him because he might take revenge for the betrayals. However, Mo simply wants to lead a new calm life, yet detective Jazmine ropes him to help her find evidence to arrest Simon. While Mo does agree to her plans, he still trusts his brother Simon.

Moreover, when Mo meets Phumzi and gets close to her, he dreams of living a new life with her, but his constant struggles lead him back to his criminal life. Firstly, Mo loses Neo, his young daughter with whom he was acquainted only for a few hours. Neo gets shot when Menzi plans to kill Mo. Next, Mo understands that even Tloto, his son, won’t talk or listen to him. Hopeless, Mo tries his best to work out his relationship with Phumzi, only to discover that she is an undercover agent. When he tries to shoot her, she reveals that she is pregnant.

Meanwhile, a mermaid curse is present in the Masire family. As the head of the family, Simon is guided by the mermaid, who asks him to sacrifice his son to become stronger. To avoid killing his son, Simon sacrifices Menzi. Menzi’s daughter Zaza thinks that Tlotlo killed her father and plans for revenge. While all this chaos is happening, Mo is unaware of the curse.

Mo and Simon get back and start their old heist life, which leads Mo to kill detective Jazmine. Finally, Mo realizes that Simon is not who he thinks he is. When Simon’s wife and son are abducted by one of his enemies, Simon strangles and kills his son as part of his sacrifice to the mermaid. Mo witnesses Simon’s terrible identity, and the series ends with a gunshot.

What can we expect in Kings of Joburg Season 2?

We are unsure whether Mo shot Simon, but we will find it out in the upcoming season. We can also expect the backstory of the mermaid curse, whether it will haunt Mo hereafter if Simon has died. Other aspects would be, Tlotlo and Zaza’s face-off, Phumzi and Mo’s relationship, Angela’s following plans, etc.
