Kammattam Review

Zee5 series Kammattam keeps increasing its stakes after starting off with a “simple” hit-and-run incident. What follows is ~3 hours of insanity that digs deep into a financial fraud case. The series is based on the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank Loan scam, which saw a ₹180 crore scam. The series is fast-paced and acted well, so much so that you rush to the next episode as soon as one ends.

Since I did not go into the series with a lot of information on the original case, I found myself fascinated with the way in which the series escalates from one small thing to the next. By the time we get to the end, it has resulted in several dead bodies that highlight how far a person’s greed can go. Zee5 has done a great job of bringing this story to us in a precise and thrilling manner. There is no wasted time, and neither do we spend too much energy on knowing most of the characters.

Several people come and go, but that’s okay, since the story itself is so thrilling that unnecessary to know about every little thing about everyone. Kammattam paints a vivid picture of every character’s desperation but also highlights where that desperation turns deadly. It’s easy to sit there waiting in excited anticipation for where the series is going, more so because the police, for once in a TV show, do a fantastic job of bringing the criminals to justice.

Sudev Nair is arresting as Antonio. His quiet charm is sometimes terrifying and makes him a fantastic detective who seems to be able to see through the person he is speaking to. It’s so refreshing to see a police officer do their job well that sometimes you question how they can know what they do! Apart from him, the other actors are also great and do a good job of bringing their characters to life. The series is an easy, arresting watch that will leave you satisfied after it’s over.

I think what I really enjoyed about it is how it answers most of its questions while also doing a good job of leaving space for the mystery to build. All the answers are given immediately, and some are left to be figured out. There’s a delicate balance that crime thrillers need to hold on to so that they are both understandable and invoke a sense of crime-solving in the audience. I think Kammattam is able to achieve that and then some.

This Zee5 series is very enjoyable and makes you want to keep watching to know what happens till the end. The pacing is well done, there are no expositions, and it’s a fun time for mystery lovers who want something short and sweet. All in all, a satisfying watch.
