Kaalratri Review
The problem with shows like Kaalratri is that it’s a mystery for the sake of being a mystery. The other problem with shows like Kaalratri is that streaming platform Hoichoi refuses to use subtlety in any of their shows, thus cheapening the little mystery that it is able to conjure up with disgusting antics to make the viewers feel titillated somehow. It’s actually disturbing to witness the amount of nonsense that this release manages to bring to the screen, leaving us to uncomfortably shift in our seats as the implications start to pour in from the first episode.
This Hoichoi mystery series showcases Debi’s plight after she is married off to a drunkard man, 10-15 years her senior. Her in-laws seem to be all lusting after one of her sisters-in-law, which is a disturbing and depraved indication that the series never lets up or clears up. On top of that, the series constantly makes insinuations about this shocking past that Debi seems to have forgotten but almost gives everything away from the start, resorting to cheap flashback sequences and odd dialogues that keep nothing to the imagination.

However, the most egregious problem with Kaalratri is perhaps how over-the-top dramatic and silly it is. The thing is, I love drama as much as the next person. But this show tries to include drama and humour into the mix that is extremely in-your-face and unnecessary, taking the mystery away from the series and replacing it with nonsense that adds nothing to the storyline. In fact, thanks to all this extra fluff, the series loses focus on its central mystery and feels funny somehow.
The characters and the story progression are surface-level and miss out on imagination, and considering the stellar shows that come out on OTT these days, one might question why the quality of content doesn’t get better for this streaming platform. I will say that the storyline is intriguing, but everything else surrounding it is so mediocre that it doesn’t elevate the watching experience and leaves you to question the point of it all.

I would also like to point out how distressing the dialogues are in this series. NSFW tag aside, the unnecessarily vulgar dialogues feel forced to get some reactions from the viewers. Or maybe it’s a way to express just how bad the family is and indicate that viewers might not have the know-how to assess the situation and come to that conclusion. Either way, screaming “পেচ্ছাপ করবো” and other obscene things feels unnecessary because the characters themselves should be enough to bring that idea forward in a story such as this.
Final Thoughts

Kaalratri tries too hard to get the point across and spells out every little thing in its story, resulting in the series being quite charmless and, frankly, vulgar. The mystery also loses its way because of the fluff that the series adds constantly to entertain its audience, resulting in a below-average watch for most viewers.

Even vulgarity has a limited liability to the audience, horrible to see this worthless series. It’s not the directorial criticising, but please go through the script and stop making this nonsense drama. Think about the casts, they all belongs from a very hard working platforms !!
JUST RIDICULOUS!!! how can you make such an nude vulgar content like this…
The script is just a complete waste … In a very impactful way you have portrayed the charecter of a NURSE so that the charecter of a nurse is set in mind of every viewer like a prostitute.. U have no right to target a particular profession even if it is a female dominant profession..U just have no right to make such and hateful content about a NURSE.. you could portray that charecter in another way ..but you chose to select a NURSE just to insult and harass the whole profession openly in a mass media….
It is very shameful that in our bengali industry such content are made..
If you don’t know about the profession please go and Google it . How could you use such an abusive language against the charecter and portraying The charecter like this .. This is a Fucking medical profession…. You get very easy target and spread whatever you want …… And for some creator like you the general non medical people thinks actually that the Nurse’s charecter is like your content only… u can’t imagine how difficult it for a female nurse to work in a hospital and deal with people because you have objectified the NURSE like prostitute….
They have to face many abusive behaviour from the patients and their family members just because you have sketched the charecter like this repeatedly…
This was made in 2024 … how could you do this…
Legal action must be taken against directors and creators like you….
Actually for doing entertainment education not needed , and you just know how to promote nudity… This content is totally abusive against NURSES….
Educated people know the value of Nursing profession….just can’t imagine what type of words and language you have used for the NURSE..
Too much hate for your team ….
U never think of creating such abusive content against any other profession but U do it every time for Nurse’s…
West bengal Is full of vulgar and illiterate people….shame on you….
