Julia’s Stepping Stones Review

Julia’s Stepping Stones recounts the life of the filmmaker and the path she took to becoming the Oscar-winning filmmaker who gave voice to the voiceless. Recounting the different events in American history that shaped her life, she focuses on the different forces that led her life to become a pioneering documentarian.

This short documentary is easy and intriguing to watch, however, it holds a deep sense of reliability that makes it among the finest works of the filmmaker. While she has presented the world with some of the best pieces of work until her death in 2022, this final work of hers is unlike any other. The documentarian has created a magic that is hard to look over as she takes us through some historical events from the previous century that she lived through.

Along the way, she also takes the viewers through these very moments, and not as some notable figure, but as a simple college student who was affected by these events in a different way. Through her eyes, her point of view, she intrigues the common people in the audience who have either lived through those times themselves or would find themselves reacting in the same way.

Especially when it comes to the Women’s Liberation Movement that took the country by storm and created a new path for a big half of the population. She shows how her involvement came to be in this event and how she did her part in helping the world see what they were trying to do. The documentary shows us a side of this event in a way that truly pulls you into the scenes as you find yourself moving to another time altogether.

Meanwhile, the cinematography of this film is like going through the clips recorded by our grandparents who are seeing daylight after years. This adds a personal touch to this biographic film as it truly catches hold of your attention when watching the film. I loved the black and white clips and pictures of the filmmaker that cover most of the film, and even the clips of her interview are held in what seems to be her most comfortable self.

The way the scenes shift through the ages and showcase the important moments of the filmmaker’s life, we are captured in something that is more than her biography. It is about a change that she witnessed in the world during these events and these are events that have shaped a better world for the generation today. She has done her part just like many others during this time, and irrespective of the challenges that came her way, she stayed to do her part.
