On edge, and Beyond Evangelical Outrage-John Of God

John of God is a Brazilian docuseries from Netflix. It follows the true story of João Teixeira de Faria, who rose to fame as the “John of God” and is now known as one of the most prolific religious swindlers in South American history. It exposes him as a faith healer who took advantage of his faithful followers before dying in custody after serving time for sexual assault.

John Of God: The Crimes of a Spiritual Healer

They called it the Palace of Healing. When millions of people around the world heard about João Teixeira de Faria, a Brazilian faith healer, they flocked to his remote outpost in the southern interior of Brazil.

For decades, Faria — better known as “John of God” — conducted non-surgical operations on thousands of patients, claiming to be in direct contact with divine energy using his hands. Almost overnight, John of God became a global figure, appearing in celebrity circles and making appearances globally. His followers say he healed their cancers and relieved their pain. But for others, Faria’s miracle surgery turned into a horror show. Those were the testimonies we heard.

John of God was jailed in 2019, but over a decade of testimonies against the healer who calls himself the “Guru of Healing” revealed a healing centre bordering on sexual abuse. Victims, who never left his hands, testified to sexual abuse, assault and rape.

The stories were tragic but believable since they were from roughly 600 people who visited the spiritual healer till 2018. There are few credible estimates for how much money Faria made off insistent visitors who travelled to Brazil searching for hope and miracles.

John Of God: The Crimes of a Spiritual Healer

The Netflix original documentary series examines the story of a Brazilian spiritual healer who allegedly channels healing energy through his hands. Believers travel from all over to receive free surgeries at Brazil’s travelling healing centre, but many claim that they experienced medical negligence. Will these devotees continue to put their faith into the hands of John of God, or will the criminal investigations bring him down?

Hoax or healings? That’s the question asked of John of God, a miraculous spiritual healer said to have performed thousands of surgeries and miracle healings in his native town of Brazil.

Turning Followers into Spiritual Crimes: John Of God

Whether you’re a believer or not in the power of faith to heal, there’s no denying that John of God has been able to turn his followers into fervent believers. Through his charisma and ability to establish credibility immediately and bond with people within minutes, he was able to draw in thousands of faithful followers from around the world. And while not all have been healed, many did leave feeling better than when they arrived.

John Of God: The Crimes of a Spiritual Healer

John of God is a dark, churning look at life inside the faith-healing empire of João Teixeira de Faria. This ground-breaking Netflix original documentary series has been met with critical acclaim.

His goal was to help the victims and those wounded in this case to be heard and vindicated. These cases are some of the most heinous that we have encountered out of Brazil, which is saying quite a lot because we have seen some pretty awful crimes in Brazil when it comes to John of God.

The docuseries unravels a multi-year investigation which will also shed light on why so many individuals have been abused at this spiritual clinic.

John of God built a spiritual surgery centre where thousands gathered for rituals as eccentric as they were intense. His patients came from worldwide with the same hope: that he could cure their illnesses with his hands.
