Jim Carrey Birthday Special: 5 Times He Showed His Versatility in Non-Comedic Movies

There are a few comic actors who take the cake, and Jim Carrey is one of them. His comedic timing, dialogue delivery and expressions make him the perfect actor for a comedy role. However, knowing the tendency of Hollywood to typecast, he has also decided to venture out of his comfort zone to tell some dramatic stories.

While they may have some underlying comedy notes, these films are the dramatic pivot he has taken to be a well-rounded actor in the industry. Carrey has consistently proven his talent and dedication to telling myriad stories.

Jim Carrey’s Non-Comedic roles

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This is perhaps the first movie anyone thinks of when they talk about Jim Carrey as a serious actor. Along with Kate Winslet, the duo tell the story of a woman who decides to get her memory of her boyfriend erased. In response, he gets his memory erased too. During this process, he realises that they have a lot of good memories that don’t deserve to be forgotten.

The film explores the nuances of a relationship and represents it realistically. The film is so good that many have dubbed it the best romantic comedy.

Dark Crimes

In this crime thriller, Jim Carrey plays a detective called to solve the murder of a businessman. However, the prime suspect in the murder is an author who has written about a similar murder too accurately to be considered a coincidence. Carrey throws himself into the character with dedication, changing his accent and even adopting a look so physically different from his own that it is completely deviant from his normal performances.

The Bad Batch

This horror film starring Jason Momoa, Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey and Suki Waterhouse is one of the most concerning films ever seen. It has a cult-like feel and focuses on the outcasts of a region that are either cannibals or hermits, which is what Carrey plays in this film.

Apart from a stellar cast, it is a film that explores the dark side of humanity and the things a person must do in order to survive such a gruelling community. Carrey’s character is a supportive figure so deviant from his normal presentation that it makes a lasting impression.

The Number 23

In this convoluted film, Jim Carrey plays two characters, Walter Sparrow and Detective Fingerling and follows the story of obsession. It explores how far a person would go for something and the repetitive nature of history if it is unknown.

In this movie, Carrey is obsessed with the 23 enigmas and completely ignores the wife and child while he explores the fixation the book character has. The life of the detective and Walter follow in parallel, telling a story with many narrative branches.

Man on the Moon

Jim Carrey is a comedian but playing one in a biopic is all about bringing seriousness and tenacity to the personality, which is exactly what he did. The actor plays the comedian Andy Kaufman as he explores the highs, lows, struggles and eventually his downfall due to cancer. Later, there would also be a documentary titled Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond that would present a sliver of the 100 hours of footage the filmmakers had from the film.

Even without all these, Jim Carrey continues to be a legend in the industry, telling stories from the genre of comedy like The Grinch, Mask or Liar Liar and animation like Sonic: The Hedgehog and A Christmas Carol.

He has continued to be a standard for actors to place themselves, especially when it comes to comedy. His versatility and willingness to play diverse roles make him a great actor.
