Making her long-awaited return with the upcoming Hindi Netflix movie, Kareena Kapoor Khan is all set to don the new avatar of Maya, and the Jaane Jaan trailer grants us a glimpse into the highly anticipated mystery thriller film.
Releasing on September 5, the trailer gives us a sneak peek into the story as a composed school teacher played by Jaideep Ahlawat reaches out to help his distressed neighbour, i.e. Kareena’s Maya D’Souza. The mystery picks up from there as Saurabh Sachdeva’s character, Maya’s estranged husband, comes into picture, much like the novel’s course of actions.

Thereafter, Ahlawat’s Naren gets pulled into the mess as well, which eventually fleshes out into a full-fledged investigation headed by Vijay Varma’s Karan. The fateful serendipitous reunion of the two friends later develops into a dysfunctional love triangle with Maya at the centre of the mystery while a search party for Saurabh’s character continues and Maya’s history of struggles also comes to light.
The movie is an Indian adaptation of the 2005 Japanese novel The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino. Netflix had already revealed a teasing announcement video for the same on August 25, 2023, thereby unveiling the first look at the movie’s cast and their characters in a solemn light.
The Sujoy Ghosh directorial has been written by him alongside Raj Vasant and produced by Jay Shewakramani, Akshai Puri, Hyunwoo Thomas Kim, Shobha Kapoor and Ektaa R Kapoor. Also starring Jaideep Ahlawat as Naren, Vijay Varma as Karan, Naisha Khanna as Maya’s daughter and others, the film revolves around Khan’s character, a single mother who tries her best to cover up her estranged husband’s murder with the help of her neighbour.

This basic premise of the story establishes itself boldly in the first few chapters of the Japanese novel, thus picking up pace and engrossing the reader with its adrenaline-driven plot. It remains to be seen how these actions and misfortunes will translate on the screen, but with Kareena back on our screens, especially this being her OTT film debut, we can anticipate a great hit ahead.
Moreover, the novel has previously been adapted several times. Some of these adaptations include the Japanese film Suspect X, the South Korean film Perfect Number, and other Tamil and Chinese adaptations for the same also predate the upcoming Hindi-language release.
The streamer had also released the cast members’ respective character posters earlier, thereby kicking off the suspenseful trail for the movie’s eventual release this September.
