Isaki Ganta Insomniacs After School Episode 11

I was surprised by Insomniacs After School Episode 11 in more ways than one. Before starting to watch it, it felt like it was just going to be an episode where the two main characters roamed around, capturing photos, creating moments, and just overall having fun. There was plenty of that, of course, but there was also a deep emotional core to it that was its best part. It all begins with us learning more about Ganta’s past and how his insomnia came to be.

Well, learning is a strong word to use here. There was a lot of show-don’t-tell as the episode opened with young Ganta looking for his mother but not being able to find her.  We already knew that this part happened, but seeing the way it was presented in the show through the eyes of a very young Ganta was devastating, and it made his situation much easier to understand. There is no doubt in my mind that if something similar happened to me personally, I would have a much worse reaction than Ganta did.

This carried over to the end of the episode, where all threads relating to Ganta’s story were beautifully tied together to reveal a fascinating cause for his condition. I can’t give justice to the way he describes that, and if you have yet to see the episode, you should seek it out just for that particular explanation. The end to this episode may just have been my favourite part of the entire season so far, and coming after an episode which was already great was just icing on the cake.

For the past few episodes now, there has been a trend of montages within the show of the various things the main characters and their friends end up doing. They are mostly very well done and give a lot of necessary contexts that would be too important to leave out but ruin the show’s pacing if it was animated like a full scene. The ones that were in here were absolutely gorgeous and focused on the mission that the two originally set out to accomplish- capturing pictures in order to make the club win the photography competition.

This was also a beautifully animated episode with a lot of absolutely gorgeous frames that featured the night sky and the stars in all of their glory. The music used in the background of the emotional scenes was very pretty and enhanced the moment that was shared between the two protagonists. A lot of meaning can be driven from an episode like Insomniacs After School Episode 11, but one wouldn’t be wrong if they liked this episode just for its slice-of-life moments because those were also fantastic.
