Irene is leaving her small town and her small-town boyfriend, Fernando, to become a director, which means making her way to Madrid. The city in 2003, is filled with people trying to get laid, party, and make the best of their lives possible. As soon as she arrives in class, she finds a clique of friends, including Da, Jimena, Adri and Matt, their foreign student friend, trying to make sure he’s getting his Spanish right.

However, this class becomes somewhat of a reality check for the friend group and leads both Da and Irene to a film premiere of a legendary director. They are incredibly moved and cry tears at the theatre. The only other person apart from them crying is Julio, who is now staring at Irene. In an attempt to make the most of the night, the trio head to a club where they celebrate the film.

For the two characters, this is the meet-cute. Their lives are changed completely after this one meeting. It is about to change more. When the group finally leaves the party and ends up on the train, a bomb explodes in the compartment rendering them injured and in the hospital. Julio and Irene are scared that they have lost each other, but a quick perusal proves them wrong. Cue huge sighs of relief.

Too soon, because soon Irene’s parents are coming to pick her up and putting her back in the small town to make sure she isn’t injured any further. However, after an intervention by Jimena and Da, the group make their way to Madrid. Fernando joins them and plans to stay the night to avoid leaving so late. Him and Irene have gotten back together.

Irene suggests they all get together and sleep in the living room like a sleepover in celebration of her return to Madrid. After everyone falls asleep in the room, she and Julio make their way to the kitchen, where their connection becomes too unbearable to handle, and they hook up. Fernando comes in at the time, and he makes his way out of the house, leaving with his dignity.

The duo then decide to keep their distance, trying their level best to keep the rapport professional because of the short film. After the first time, their relationship ruins the prospects of a lead actor in Irene’s film, Jimena begs her to keep this relationship professional. However, a newspaper article tips off the legendary director, and he asks Julio to be in his film.

Their relationship is purely transactional and hinges on him stripping for the director occasionally. Julio is changed by this experience. Even though he brings levity and tenacity to the role, there are certain things that cause problems between the two shoots. The schedules clash, and things become even worse than before.

Fortunately, the short film is done, and he can continue shooting his actual films in peace. That move was not great for Irene and Julio, who have gotten together for a short time before Fernando makes his way back to the city and upends everything the two know about relationships. Julio was taking her advice about acting, and her indiscretion ruined things for them.

In his next film, Da manages to worm in for a job when he corrects the dialogues in the script. Irene and Adri also get a job in this film, and Julio is not at all happy about it. He thinks Irene is the reason most of his films are bad and why his thoughts become so loud clouding his judgement. Irene, though, helps him one day, and the shoot goes well for him.

The next day she finds out that the connection they made when she helped him meant nothing. This leads to some more problems between them. When Julio finds out that Jimena is pregnant, he comes to visit her, and they get back together after his truthful confession about love. Soon, they get back together and things are good as ever. They are hanging out. They are making cookies together. It’s all very wholesome until he has to go for these Goya awards.

Irene feels really objectified and essentially a trophy girlfriend. At the very last moment, she comes to the conclusion that she will not be going. Julio takes Adri instead, and they have a lot of fun. Irene is experimenting with people rather than making an actual commitment. A development that makes its evolution to 2022 as well.

Julio is in rehab again after multiple attempts at getting sober and Irene is planning on getting married. She is mad that his rehab facility is five minutes away from her place. She is getting married, but that doesn’t stop her from having sex with Julio. This causes her to move up her wedding date in guilt and Julio manages to crash that as well, presenting her with an inrefutable opportunity. The season ends with her stuck in the middle of this big decision of her directing a film and her getting married to Fernando.

  1. I’m tired of bad endings! Let Irene get with Julio in the end because their connection is strongest. I like Fernando too but I think that Irene won’t truly be happy with him and she keeps hurting him. Let him find his real true love and let Irene help Julio beat his addiction. Then let THEM get married!
