Humint Ending Explained

The season opens with seasoned NIS agent Director Cho losing a vulnerable “humint,” or human intelligence, a person who is made to work as a way of getting information from places where others cannot. She dies due to his carelessness – he thinks that they are rescuing her, but his team refuses to take responsibility for her at the last second. The consequence leaves him completely heartbroken, although he gulps down his feelings and goes to Vladivostok to get to the bottom of the human trafficking and drug trade operation.

On the other hand is Park Geon from the State Security team, cracking down on human trafficking and drug trade from the North Korean side. While investigating the case, he stumbles upon Chae Seon-hwa, his former fiancée, who is working as a server in a restaurant. Setting his sights on Hwang Chi-sung, the North Korean consul general, Geon suspects that he’s the one colluding with the mafia to keep the operation running. This information is validated by Cho, who mentions it during his conversation with Seon-hwa, who is a humint for him.

Before long, Chi-sung, who has been keeping an eye on everyone in this game, figures out that there’s some con taking place with Seon-hwa, who seems to be meeting someone else in the guise of meeting with a Russian client. On the other hand, Cho, too, realises that Seon-hwa has ties to Geon somehow.

Does Seon-hwa get out?

After Seon-hwa is caught by Chi-sung, she is sold off to the Russians, with Cho keeping close tabs on her. Meanwhile, Geon arrives at the South Korean hideout and gets the information from Manager Im. Shocked that Chi-sung would do this to Seon-hwa, he rushes to find her. Seon-hwa is drugged by the Russians, but the two men soon arrive to free her. A few bullets here and there later, they save not just Seon-hwa, but all the other women trapped by the Russians.

What happens to Cho and Geon?

Chi-sung spins the tale of Geon being corrupt to get him off his back. He uses the Arirang restaurant manager to give false testimony and then arrives at the Russian hideout to stop Geon and Cho from running away with the women. A lengthy gun battle ensues, at the end of which Geon dies in Seon-hwa’s arms, with Cho also badly shot. Thankfully, Chi-sung is killed.

In the end, an enquiry takes place regarding the mission Cho undertook, wherein we learn that Seon-hwa was sent somewhere where no one knew her and she could relive her life. We also learn what Geon told him just before he died – he asked whether he’d be ok, because he didn’t want to die. It’s a heartbreaking realisation for the audience, wherein we see these seemingly ruthless officers becoming human for a split second and having a human reaction. In the end, Cho keeps an eye on Seon-hwa from afar, who is safe and happy, while he re-enters his life of espionage once again.
