How To Build a Sex Room Review: Home Renovation But Make It Kinky

How To Build a Sex Room is a makeover reality TV series released on Netflix on 8 July 2022. The series will follow couples looking for more spice in the bedroom hire luxury interior designer Melanie Rose to create stylish spaces where they can carry out any fantasy they wish. You’ve seen kitchen renovations, you’ve seen bathroom transformations, but you’ve never seen anything quite like this!

The series is hosted by Melanie Rose, the designer and it has 8 episodes in total with a runtime of about 37-46 minutes respectively. Born and raised in London, Rose has spent over 20 years working as a much sought-after interior designer since relocating to Los Angeles. From apartments to multimillion-dollar homes, she’s done it all — but she’s spent the last decade designing sacred spaces for her clients’ sensual and erotic needs.

Mary Poppins of Sex Room

What I like about this reality series is that it straight away gets into the business instead of trying to educate its audiences before diving into the world of pleasures. Melanie Rose does talks about the connotations that come with the word ‘sex room’ briefly, as people mostly concentrate on the word and sex and associate it with something dirty or disgusting.

But a sex room can be anything from a sumptuous bedroom to a dungeon under the stairs and especially when she designs them, they are aesthetic works of art or fantasies coming to life. Our first couple who have sought Rose’s help is Taylor & Ayjay and they want to turn their basement into a sexy rock n roll dungeon.

Whenever Melanie meets any couple or client, she first tries to get to know what kind of people they are. Like what they do, how long have they been living in their house and why they want a sex room. When she gets an overview, she delves deeper by looking at the space in which the couple wants to be transformed. Lastly, she introduces her little bag of tricks.

The bag contains all types of sex toys and she introduces them to understand what kind of toys or kinks the couple is into. So that the space looks extremely personal with their choice of things that doesn’t throw them off from exploring new things. Once Melanie has a complete understanding of the couples’ fantasies and they are willing to explore more, she takes them to explore some more.

Like when Taylor and Ayjay expressed interest in exploring different sex toys like butt plugs or flogging, Melanie took them to the kink coaches so they can learn the right way. Also, audience discretion at this point as you will be met with a topless lady with nipple covers and a naked bottom, getting flogged.

Such learning trips will be a few throughout the 8 episodes, as and when the host meets an inquisitive and adventurous couple. Another important personality on the show is the general contractor named Mike, who actually builds all the things that the designer envisions. He is like a funny sidekick or a quirky friend which is total fun to work with that people might even question your relationship.

Final Thoughts: Stream It or Skip It?

How To Build a Sex Room on Netflix is definitely a kinky spin on the house renovation shows, which transforms your home to another level. However, if you are not open to having a conversation about sex, kinks and various fantasies, the show might look a bit bizarre to you. It will educate you about different sex toys, restraining crosses, sex swings, bondage techniques, some D&S and love-making tantra chaises.

The show features 11 couples in total from hetero couples to queer and even polyamorous families. The last episode was definitely challenging as compared to the others, it featured a lesbian couple wanting to revamp their sprinter van and a 50-year-old recently divorced single lady who wanted a cosy and private sex room of her own to explore.

The show is definitely a new concept which will create discourse among the public, but after a while, it felt like the designer Melanie Rose was offering the same thing to every couple, in varying degrees of extremity and just slightly different interiors. Does spicing up the sex life lead to BDSM only? I mean, surely there are other physical and psychological factors involved as well.

If a couple is having sex issues then, would a change in their bedroom with new sex toys, make much difference in the long run? Maybe they needed a sexologist as well in some cases, instead of just a home makeover.

How To Build a Sex Room is streaming on Netflix.

  1. I am so mad about this show. Consent, education, and safety are CRITICAL, and it is wildly irresponsible to show an audience BDSM without enforcing those.

Melanie bullying her contractor to hit her ass with a flogger (obviously scripted) is HORRIBLE because it violates consent. She should have absolutely stopped when he said no. That’s harassment. It gives the kink community a bad rap.

And you NEED to teach people about safety. Otherwise, you are setting them up to have a very bad, possibly fatal experience.

They got into rope, and they didn’t once mention anything about watching for tension on the skin, discoloring, cutting blood circulation off, being extremely careful about any rope around the neck, and most importantly MEDICAL SCISSORS! Rope truly can go very wrong very fast, and you can’t undo ties to get someone out. You need to have medical / fabric scissors within reach any time there is any rope play.

This show had an opportunity to correct the “Fifty Shades” bullshit representation of BDSM, to show people about being careful, prepared, safe, and being extremely careful with consent. Instead, it perpetuates some of the “wild” representations, which can still do a lot of damage.

  2. You do realize that they don’t show everything right. People can be so negative for no reason at all! It’s so pathetic. Melanie was awesome and her and her contractor joke around all the time. He laughs and keeps it moving. Stop being so negative and find positivity in things for once.
