High Water (Wielka woda) isa Polish political drama series released on Netflix. It is inspired by the real-life events of the Millennium Flood which hit Poland, as well as parts of the Czech Republic and Germany in 1997. Directed by Jan Holoubek and Bartłomiej Ignaciuk. Along with Anna Kępińska as a producer and the originator of the series, and Kasper Bajon and Kinga Krzemińska as writers.
The cast of the series includes Agnieszka Żulewska, Tomasz Schuchardt, Ireneusz Czop, Anna Dymna, Jerzy Trela, Mirosław Kropielnicki, Blanka Kot, Tomasz Kot, Adam Nawojczyk, Leszek Lichota, Marta Nieradkiewicz, Łukasz Lewandowski, Roman Gancarczyk, Tomasz Sapryk, and Maria Maj.
This is the first time the story of the flood has been adapted on screen and shows how in July 1997, scientists and local government officials face life-and-death decisions when a destructive flood wave threatens the city of Wrocław in Poland. The local authorities, led by the aspiring politician Jakub Marczak bring in Jaśmina Tremer, a female hydrologist with a troubled past, to help save the city at any cost.

At the same time, Andrzej Rębacz returns to his hometown, a village near Wrocław, unexpectedly leading the rebellious residents against the disaster. Under time pressure, the authorities make a difficult decision that will forever change the lives of the main characters as well as the history of the entire region and its inhabitants.
High Water Ending Explained
In the series, we saw that the residents of Kęty push back against the decision to flood the town, which leads to the water level rising and eventually flooding the whole city. After the river overflows and floods the basement, the hospital staff rushes to evacuate the patients and in the process of transferring Andrzej Rębacz’s father, they lose him to death, due to his critical condition.

Meanwhile, Andrzej is still at the protest with his son, unaware of his father’s well-being and even putting his own life on the line. It was shown that Klara got swayed away by the rising water flow and with Klara’s safety in question, Marczak rushes across town to find her. On the other hand, Tremer reaches out to an old friend named Half Boot to help her mother.
She buys some drugs from his dealer and injects them into her mother’s arm. Once she gets unconscious, with the help of Half Boot and his friends, they transport the mother with the help of a crane via the window to their neighbour’s house upstairs. Once Andrzej comes back home and listens to the voicemails from the hospital, he rushes there by boat, but faces opposition from the city people, as they recognise him from the news.
On their way to the hospital, he realises how his decision to protect the village has caused tragedy for the city people. In the hospital, he meets Jakub Marczak, who was looking for Klara there and got to know about a dead girl in the skull patch hoodie at a mortuary, announced on local news. Heartbroken, he accompanies them there but it is another girl in the hoodie.

On seeing a number of dead bodies in the mortuary, Andrzej decides to take his father’s body home and have a funeral there. Jaśmina is also set to go out and look for her daughter when she also hears about her death on the news and spirals down to the drug route again. But Half boot stops her from injecting and tells about a teenage girl hanging out downstairs.
When Jaśmina goes down in frustration, she finds Klara there and is finally relieved. Then they both set out to her father’s office to inform him of her whereabouts. On the way, Klara tries to ask her if she is her mother but doesn’t get any direct answer from her. Finally, at the office, the three of them find each other.
After almost losing everyone in the floods, Jaśmina tries to make amends and tells the truth to Klara. She even promises her mother to never disappear again and introduces her granddaughter to her.

On the political front, rescue services from other countries came to Poland to help during the crisis, delivering water, food, and medicine to the people who were trapped inside their homes. They were also key in rescuing people from other places and those who sadly got stuck on the streets during the tragedy.
Will There Be High Water Season 2?
In the end, some responsible for the mismanagement of the situation was called to testify, but it seems like most of them were released without proper punishment. Even Andrzej is arrested for pelting at the military chopper but seems to have been released as well. In the court, Marczak and Jasmina part ways in a friendly manner and gives him the news that she is pregnant.
Considering the fictionalised series is based on real-life events and is a limited series, the possibility of another season seems to be low. The whole concept is built around the flood, rather than the character, thus it doesn’t leave much to be explored further. Nor any news of renewal has been issued by Netflix or its creators.
High Water is currently streaming on Netflix.
