Head Over Heels Episode 5 Recap

The episode opens with Gyeon-woo walking in on Seong-ah and Yeom Hwa’s ritual in front of the haunted building. He’s in disbelief and looks utterly defeated, leaving her to chase after him. All of her odd behaviour slowly started to make sense to him, leaving him utterly heartbroken at being lied to. Seong-ah follows the rows of ghosts to where Gyeon-woo is sitting on the street and comforts him. He opens up about his heartbreak somewhat, but he doesn’t believe her in the end.

As both kids mull over what is happening in their lives, General Dongcheon is tense about what is happening at the abandoned house. The next morning, Flower Master questions her about Yeom Hwa, and she tells them that she danced with her the night before. Shocked, he tells her that Yeom Hwa has put everyone who came to the house the night before up as an offering to the evil entity, and thus, they sealed the evil in instead of going inside.

The problems are manifold for Seong-ah; however, Gyeon-woo is now ignoring her. Ji-ho picks up on the negativity, along with their other friends, who try to make them forgive one another. When that doesn’t work, Seong-ah opens up about being a shaman to Gyeon-woo, and it’s surprisingly vulnerable, a confession that is almost impossible not to forgive. Unfortunately, Geon-woo doesn’t forgive her, and she tries her hardest to save him, especially from the ghost baby clinging to Ku Do-yeon.

However, the situation escalates, resulting in Gyeon-woo figuring out how Seong-ah’s spells work, and he takes comfort in her embrace. But it’s too late, and while they are in the library, a bookcase falls on them both. With the clock running out, Seong-ah exposes her truth to Do-yeon so that she will give her the doll that holds the baby’s ghost, while Ji-ho overhears Gyeon-woo talking to Choi Hui-na and promising to be unhappy for all his life. Afterwards, Gyeon-woo tells Ji-ho to stay away from him for his own good. Eventually, Ji-ho agrees to be Gyeon-woo’s human amulet as well.

Later that day, Seong-ah ends up reuniting the ghost baby with his mother, effectively ending on a happy note. However, she spots the moisturiser that she gave Gyeon-woo out in the trash on the street and breaks down, unable to help him in any way, and just then he arrives and stands with her.

Another week, another gut-wrenching episode, and I must say, Cho Yi-hyun is the driving force behind me loving this series. She’s so easy to love that loving the series also becomes easy. I love the heavy emphasis on complex emotions, and episode 5 reiterates that. The complexity of Seong-ah’s job as a shaman is compounded by her feelings for Gyeon-woo, who has his own demons. It all culminates in a dangerous push-and-pull dynamic between the two that is both heartbreaking and extremely watchable. I loved this episode as there is a mystery underneath it all that will leave you hooked.
