Great Expectations Episode 6 Review: A Mad Mad Final Turn of Events

A lot of things unfold, very drastically in Great Expectations Episode 6. It is the finale and it feels like it with so many losses and some weak glimmering hope that the audience would want to hold onto and swim to another season.

Great Expectations Episode 6 opens with Compeyson’s arrival at Pip’s hometown, entering Joe and Sara’s home for shelter. But, he is not the only one in town as Magwitch too has entered the scene. But, he ends up meeting with Estella, as the latter mentions which causes a rift between her and Miss Havisham.

While all this happens, a storm enrages. A storm that destroys lives. For starters, when Miss Havisham’s mansion falls apart due to the storm and seeks out Estella to call for help, Estella leaves her ripped and cold after hearing things from Magwitch. Meanwhile, Pip and Jaggers are also at a loss.

Wemmick informs Jagger and Pip that the ship that held all their goods got destroyed at sea during the storm. The real shocker turns out to be that the goods which were an investment held all of Pp’s fortune that came to him through his benefactor.

Great Expectations Episode 6: Final Verdict

On an overall level, Great Expectations was a show that really took the dark and gritty tones of Dickens’ novel and put it on screen, be it thematically or cinematographically. Yes, it is agreed that the depth of Dickens’ novel is not thoroughly achieved through this book-to-screen adaptation. But, Knight has really pushed the ledge and tried to make the series as thoughtful and authentic as it could be.

However, it is important to note how Great Expectations Episode 6 was by far the best one out of the lot and served us with everything we would expect out of a finale, from the death of a character to the birth (or, hope) of a new relationship. The sixth episode broke down every character in an intricate manner to give them enough potential and air to grow out in another season that we are surely expecting to come after the way the show has ended.
