Great Expectations Episode 4: Estella’s Call?

Great Expectations Episode 4 ties up all our main characters together. It is mostly Estella and Pip who take the spotlight with the former coming to London to pick up her husband and the latter making ends meet to make sure he is in Estella’s life in some form.

The fourth episode of Great Expectations starts with Estella’s deepest desire to escape the mansion that has trapped her since childhood. She dreams about what it would be like to escape Miss Havisham’s clutches. Meanwhile, Miss Havisham has been in her own cloud in this episode trying to make sure everything goes right between Mr. Drummle and Estella as she deems the meeting to be of prime importance; even more important than Estella herself.

Pip, on the other hand, gets to know from Drummle that he is meeting his future wife aka Estella who stirs up Pip and lands him in a bar, getting wasted and picking up fights until Jaggers arrives to save Pip from a right hook.

However, in the latter half of the episode, we realize Jaggers’ true intentions and why he is so fixated and focused on Pip. A lot has to do with Miss Havisham and Estella and, the latter picking her husband. Money, pride, greed and love are all tested with determination wrapping around everyone as helplessness crawling on people’s skin.

Great Expectations Episode 4: Final Thoughts

How manipulation and desperation go hand in hand is very well represented in Great Expectations Episode 4. Of course, there is a huge dramatization of the events when translated from the book to screen but, it only helps in making the plot stronger, visually speaking. The themes of isolation, loneliness and feeling trapped are also reflected brightly in Estella and Miss Havisham in this episode with both being the same yet so different in many ways.

One needs to take a long leap of faith and call this series good at this point because it seems like it is getting there. It is on a journey to impress and shatter us and, with the fourth episode, Great Expectations seems to be preparing us well for what is to come and go down and rise by the end of the series.
