Good Night World Review: A Family With Too Many Issues and No Ways To Resolve Them

Good Night World Review: A new virtual reality anime is in town, and it turned out to be a pretty unexpected watch. Based on the manga of the same name by Uru Okabe, Good Night World (グッド・ナイト・ワールド ) is a psychological thriller that Netflix adapted into a 12-episode show animated by NAZ Studio.

This studio has previously worked on Id: Invaded, Hamatora: The Animation, Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, etc.

The opening theme for this anime is Black Crack by the famous VTuber Kuzuha [ja] of Nijisanji, and the ending theme, Salvia, is by Nornis, a vocal unit composed of Machita Chima and Inui Toko of Nijisanji.

Here, we also see a lot of famous voice actors voicing the anime characters like Nobunaga Shimazaki, Akio Otsuka, Aya Endō, etc.

Good Night World Review: Discussion

Good Night World Review

The anime starts with a chase and the lore about the Akabane family being one of the strongest in the Planet game. Shortly after, we meet Ichi, the incredibly powerful member of the Akabane family. He is practically unbeatable, very good at this game, and has a loving virtual family of 4 comprised of other players.

In his family, Ichi is especially attached to the father figure and head Shiro but also loves the cooking that the motherly May makes and is protective of AAAAA, who is not that strong in the game.

But everything changes when the sole rule of not finding out about each other’s personal lives gets violated by outside forces.

Good Night World Review

The first episode did not disappoint, as from the get-go, we get introduced to a dysfunctional family who gets along well only while being online and not knowing each other’s identities. The Akabanes are all related in the real world, as well, but are so broken by life that they cannot express themselves in front of others.

But this anime is not all about the family, the world of this game is pretty interesting as well. They have unruly pirates, run by Pico on one side, who wish to bring Ichi by her side at any cost and get her hands on the Blackbird.

Blackbird is a precious endgame content, capturing which can get you 300 million yen of real-world money. On the other hand, we have the most powerful guild called Granada, who, despite appearing harmless, are pretty dreadful themselves.

Good Night World Review: A Family With Too Many Issues and No Ways To Resolve Them

The characters in this anime are likeable yet hateful and interesting. This quality indeed makes them multidimensional and more human-like than most anime characters. Another fascinating touch to this show is how loneliness, depression and despair are showcased.

Most characters in Good Night World are indeed hostile towards the real world, but that is not without a good reason. They, including Ichi, are miserable creatures who want to change their circumstances in this new, fantastical, different world. Thus, they select the option of creating a bond with strangers who will not judge them and stay with them for who they are.

From a psychological point of view, this anime also does a pretty nice job, as it is filled with unexpected twists and turns. One moment, you will like one character, but the next moment, they will turn out to be insufferable.

We also see some complex portrayal of relationships, and surprisingly, it is not limited to just familial ties. It also includes connections between lovers, friends and with AI. This show produced some legitimate questions on how we should deal with the advancement of AI, their existence, their effect on humans and vice versa.

But Good Night World anime is not at all without its faults. The information shown is too much. At times, you will feel many things are happening and would expect to get answers to that, but then, will not get any. The tragic pasts were also not properly revealed, and many things were left unsaid. The ending specifically is confusing and raises many questions about what actually happened. I personally would have loved a proper conclusion.

Verdict

Good Night World Review

Good Night World is a nice watch for those who love psychological thrillers. The gore might get to some, but that part actually makes the anime more ruthless and realistically engaging. The background scores are good, and the sad moments can successfully make you feel sorry.

The first half is not that dark, but it is interesting to watch. The second half is where things get serious, and you get hooked. The last half kind of fails to impress, mainly because it leaves many details they should have explored. All in all, Good Night World is a satisfactory watch that you should definitely check out on Netflix.

If the rest of the show is like this its not gonna keep me to much,

My score: 1.5 of 5 slow stuff make me dizziZZZZZzzzzz…zzzzz…..

  2. Episode 9 and 10 the main person and the group using 2 whole episodes on fighting arguments, yelling and crying, the action scenes are barely anything to watch,

Good grif its bordom, more fighting and less talking,

I feel my life energy is draining very fast, i cannot watch much more without fastforward,

  3. Sooooo whyyyy does a little 10 year fucking boy brat kill the the bosses assistant, i liked her but noooo netflix is squasing her brain all over the street,
