Fall For Me Review

In Netflix’s German film Fall For Me, we follow a young woman who goes down a path of mystery, intrigue and scams as she suddenly finds herself investigating her sister’s new fiancé, who doesn’t seem to be who he says. However, her plans to dig deeper are halted when she suddenly finds herself inexplicably drawn to a mysterious stranger in a bar.

Netflix would like you to believe that this film is steamier than it actually is. In reality, this is a mystery film that has elements of sexual tension. The film focuses on romance scams and surprisingly does a good job of bringing to light how people are easily manipulated into giving up every last penny to a stranger by taking advantage of their naivety and vulnerability. There are genuine moments of intrigue and although you know from early on that Tom and Manu are all scamming Valeria and many other women, you still can’t help but hope that they get out of this mess.

The characters, especially Lilli, are likeable. I mean, you obviously dislike Nick and Manu, but Lilli, as the protagonist, is not just likeable but also inspirational as she spots Manu’s crap from a mile away and constantly looks into him. With Tom, even though she gets swayed, she still keeps her head to herself. What I think the film lacked was genuine passion and steaminess. There isn’t a lot of chemistry between Tom and Lilli, and the former remains a background character throughout. Although he is talked up to be some dangerous Casanova, you don’t see it translated on screen.

Moreover, there are hardly any twists here. The film is pretty cut and dry and does not contain any elements of surprise. If you’ve watched enough thrillers, you would know exactly where this is going. I don’t think I was particularly bored, but viewers who are expecting this to be something more than an average thriller will be disappointed. It doesn’t have the oomph factor to make it memorable or differentiate it from others like it in the genre.

I enjoyed the performances, although most of the actors felt underutilised. I think we needed a bit more of Nick and Garisol in the film because Manu and Tom ended up not being that big of a deal in the end. I think the antagonists, in general, needed a bit more to do. It would’ve made all the difference, in my opinion. I enjoyed the cinematography as well, everything looked picture-perfect, so that really made it a shame that the twists and the characters are so lacklustre.

Fall For Me is fine for what it is and is strictly mid-tier. I think it’s great for a one-time watch with friends, but if you’re expecting something a bit more thrilling and juicier, this one will disappoint you. It’s a flat watch.
