Everything To Know About Onslaught: There is something different about the premise of Onslaught. A genetically engineered squad of super soldiers escapes from a secret military facility; a desert trailer park becomes a battlefield; a former Army sniper has to pick up the weapons she thought she had left; and somewhere in all of this are Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Drew Starkey and Alex Pereira playing a man called Butcher.

Adam Wingard directed Onslaught is A24’s latest swing at genre cinema that appears to be caught somewhere between an ‘80s B-movie, a military thriller and a slasher. At the centre of all the chaos is Adria Arjona, who plays a mother who discovers that being done with violence does not mean that violence is also done with you.

The film arrives in cinemas on September 4, 2026.

Everything To Know About Onslaught: What Is It About?

At the heart of the movie is Celeste, played by Adria Arjona. She is a former Army sniper who has retired from the life that defined her once.

Celeste is a mother living with her young child, attempting to build something ordinary. A group of genetically engineered super soldiers escape from a secret military facility, turning the surroundings into a nightmare. Celeste is forced to get her hands back on the skills she had retired from to protect her child.

Going by the synopsis available, there appears to be no multiverse or franchise mythology and absolutely no homework for the viewers.

Adria Arjona is at the Centre of the Story

Onslaught immediately feels interesting because of the actor itself: Adria Arjona. Arjona is known for projects including Andor and Hit Man, and now she gets to step properly into action territory as Celeste.

The character is not introduced as some superhero who saves the world by kicking open doors. She is a mother, a former soldier who is living with PTSD and has built a quieter life for herself. This itself makes things feel personal.

The film’s entire emotional engine is essentially built around what happens when someone who has tried to put violence behind her is to rediscover how good she is still at surviving it. Arjona has already been singled out by early reviews as one of the film’s biggest strengths. 

Who Else is in Onslaught?

The cast of the film is stacked with stars including Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Drew Starkey, Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, Michael Biehn and Alex Pereira.

A24’s official cast list confirms the ensemble, and the trailer and promotional materials have revealed that Pereira is playing one of the genetically engineered super soldiers. Reginald VelJohnson being involved makes the whole cinema feel like it has accidentally wandered somewhere into an ‘80s action drama.

Horror, Action, Thrill: Onslaught is Serving Everything

Calling Onslaught just an action movie would be underselling the recipe. It is a 92-minute-long movie that comes with an R-rating.

Something is refreshing about a movie that intends to cause chaos and get out before anyone has time to ask whether the cinematic universe needs a Phase Two.

There is ‘80s Somewhere in the Room

One of the most interesting parts about Onslaught is how retro it appears. The premise itself feels like something that could be on a VHS tape cover.

The film seems to lean into that sensibility rather than trying to disguise it. Early reviews have compared it to The Terminator, Rambo, Die Hard and other paranoid action films. The film is not trying to reinvent the concept of a parent defending their home from unstoppable machinery but is rather trying to make it fun again.

There Is Something Darker Under All the Blood

The film is not completely interested in being fun. The film also reportedly draws on the history of Operation Paperclip and the idea of Nazi scientists, folding that history into its fictional super-soldier story.

This gives Onslaught a slightly stranger edge because under the genetically engineered killers there is perhaps an uncomfortable question: what happens when institutions believe that human beings are more useful as weapons than people? The film might not be approaching that question like a historical drama, but the idea sits there.

Should Onslaught Be On Your Watchlist?

If the words A24, Adria Arjona, Adam Wingard, genetically engineered super soldiers horror, action energy: all in the same jar sounds like a good Friday night plan, then you should.

Onslaught seems to be a movie for a very specific kind of audience who enjoy when the cinema is a little feral. It is perhaps the movie you discover, watch at midnight, text your friend about and describe in the most excited tone.
