Everything to Know About Madden (2026): Starring Nicholas Cage as the legendary American football coach, John Madden, the upcoming biographical drama, Madden brings the fascinating life story to the screen. While American football might be the starting point, the movie is anticipated to be considerably more about Madden’s story itself.

Everything to Know About Madden (2026): What Is It About?
The film Madden is inspired by the life of John Madden, one of the most recognisable figures in American football history. However, rather than focusing on merely one achievement or period, the film seems to follow his journey across several different defining chapters.
The story explores his partnership with Al Davis and the journey towards a Super Bowl-winning partnership, while also looking at Madden’s evolution and journey into becoming one of football’s most recognisable voices in the history of football and his involvement in building the Madden NFL franchise.
The film’s official synopsis describes Madden as a celebration of a “brilliant mind”, lifelong friendships, partnership with his “daring wife” Virginia and his “infectious love” for people and football.

So for most viewers, the streaming platform would be the primary spot to watch the film when it arrives in mid-November.
Madden Cast: Who Is In Madden?
The film brings together an interesting ensemble to describe the life of legendary John Madden. At the centre of the film is Nicolas Cage playing John Madden himself, Kathryn Hahn playing Virginia Madden, and Christian Bale playing Al Davis.
The cast list also includes Sienna Miller, John Mulaney, Shane Gillis, Simms May, Luke Klein, Chad Gall, Taylor Upchurch, Joel Murray, Shane Donovan Lewis, Michael Beasley, Matt Medrano, Tanner Price, Omar Cook, Buck Watkins, Matt Seybert, Miles Burris, Jake Kelley, Tyrell Crawford, and Brandon Murphy, among others.

The Real Madden
John Madden in real life coached the Oakland Raiders between 1969 and 1978, leading the team to its victory in Super Bowl XI and retiring from coaching in 1979, subsequently building an enormously successful career as a football broadcaster. Madden’s influence was particularly interesting because it extended beyond the actual coaching career: his commentary, enthusiasm, and the ability to explain the game helped football become more accessible. His video game franchise further extended the influence, introducing the legacy to people who experienced football through gaming rather than television.
Madden passed away in 2021, aged 85, but his association with the sport and the gaming franchise continues to live on, making him an important figure, especially in American sporting culture.
Final Thoughts
With a story that brings together sports history, personal relationships, broadcasting and video game culture, Madden seems to have quite a few interesting routes to explore. The story of the legend being told with Nicolas Cage stepping up as him, alongside Christian Bale as AI Davis and Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Madden, makes the project even more interesting.
The film seems to have an opportunity to introduce the audience to the person behind the Madden NFL games. Whether viewers are familiar with his coaching career or simply know the franchise, there is an entire story behind the legacy itself.
Madden releases on Amazon Prime Video on November 18, 2026.
