At the most basic level, American Hostage is about a radio journalist who gets caught in the middle of a hostage crisis, but a radio journalist caught in a hostage crisis makes it sound much simpler than it actually is.
Jon Hamm plays Fred Heckman, a popular Indianapolis radio reporter and news director whose life changes when Tony Kiritsis, played by Giovanni Ribisi, takes mortgage broker Dick Hall hostage and demands that his grievances be broadcast through Heckman’s radio programme.
Fred is suddenly not just reporting a crisis but is a part of it, and that makes things complicated because what exactly is a journalist supposed to do when the story is calling the newsroom?
American Hostage seems to be taking the phrase “story of the day” and making it terrifyingly literal.
Real Story Behind Jo Hamm’s American Hostage: American Hostage is not a mere fictional thriller with a 1970s newsroom aesthetic. The series is inspired by a real incident that unfolded in Indianapolis in February 1977. Thus, it is inspired by a real story but is dramatised.
When Does American Hostage Premiere?
American Hostage premieres on September 20, 2025, Sunday on MGM+.
The series will begin with two episodes, with new episodes dropping weekly on Sundays at 9 PM ET. The season consists of eight episodes and is scheduled to conclude on November 1.
So, if you like getting something to sink with before settling into the weekly torture of waiting, MGM+ has clearly understood the assignment. The first two episodes are reportedly titled “My Town Indy” and “McMahon, Martinis & Madness”, respectively.
Who Else Is In the American Hostage Cast?
The series has a packed ensemble alongside Jon Hamm, who plays Fred Heckman and Giovanni Ribisi, who plays Tony Kiritsis.
The cast list includes Jonathan Tucker, Mireille Enos, William Jackson Harper, Kat Cunning, Kristoffer Polaha, June Laporte, Bradley Sawatzky, Darcy Fehr, Sullivan McIntyre, Erik Athavale, Samantha Kendrick, Isla Verot, Nazariy Demkowicz, Louie Tait, John C. MacDonald, and Scott Cranwill.
Kristoffer Polaha’s Dick Hall seems particularly important because he is the person physically kidnapped inside Tony Kiritsis’ hostage situation while Fred becomes psychologically and professionally trapped by it from the other side.
Who created American Hostage?
The television series is co-created and co-showrun by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers.
The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, with Ryan, Myers, Jon Hamm and several others serving as the executive producers. Directors Adam Arkin and Nina Lopez-Corrado are also among the executive producers, along with directing episodes of the series.
American Hostage Is Based on a Podcast
The other reason the show is interesting is that television is not the real beginning of the story’s life.
The series is based on the first season of the scripted podcast American Hostage, which premiered in 2022, starring Jon Hamm as Fred Heckman. The audio drama was produced by Criminal Content and released through Amazon Music and Wondery.
The podcast won Best Scripted Podcast at the 2023 Signal Awards, helping push the story to a television adaptation, which feels appropriate. A story about radio journalism became a podcast, and the podcast paved the way to a television series. The medium changed, but the story remained.
American Hostage Has Been Screened at TIFF
Before its MGM+ premiere, American Hostage had its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2026, giving an early look at the series.
This makes September 20 less of a mysterious first-look situation and more of the show’s proper release for the audience beyond the festival circuit.
Why Does American Hostage Feel Timed Oddly?
There is something slightly eerie about watching a story from 1977 through a lens of 2026: the technology has changed, so have the media ecosystems and the speed at which information travels, but the fundamental question concerning what happens when someone’s desperation meets an audience remains.
Back then, Kiritsis understood that getting on the radio could give him a platform, and today the same basic instinct can play out through podcasts, livestreams, social media, reels and videos. The microphone just got smaller and easily accessible. This perhaps makes American Hostage more interesting than its title suggests.
