In the film Dry Day, set in a small town in Northern India, the protagonist, Gannu, a local goon, harbours aspirations of becoming a corporator. However, his political ambitions face significant opposition from a more powerful group. In a bid to carve a unique niche for himself, Gannu launches a political party, with a seemingly strange promise: the eradication of alcohol from the town. The irony lies in the fact that Gannu himself is grappling with alcoholism.
The premise of an alcoholic leading a party committed to tackling alcohol-related issues adds a comedic touch to the storyline, capturing the often absurd and contradictory nature of politics. Despite the promising concept, the film falls short in its execution, hindering its appeal to viewers.

The narrative kicks off by showcasing Gannu’s carefree attitude towards alcohol consumption, indulging with his buddies without regard for his responsibilities. Despite being married and expecting a child, Gannu remains unchanged, causing strain in his marital life. The film introduces numerous characters and delves into political clashes, but the humour and engagement factors do not always resonate.
One notable flaw is the predictability of the plot, as viewers can easily anticipate the film’s outcome. This predictability, coupled with a runtime that becomes burdensome after 75 minutes, contributes to a sense of monotony. Viewers may find themselves longing for Gannu to shift his focus from his frivolous habits to earnest political endeavours.
Jitendra Kumar and Shriya Pilgaonkar deliver good performances, but the script fails to showcase their potential fully. Annu Kapoor’s character, portrayed as a hurdle, falls short of utilising the actor’s considerable talent.

Dry Day Review: Final Thoughts
Overall, Dry Day holds an interesting concept that, with a more focused execution, could have been transformed into a hilariously entertaining political drama. However, the film struggles to maintain a solid narrative, getting entangled in Gannu’s political and marital challenges without offering good engagement. Despite the fine performances, the film misses the mark in delivering a thoroughly delightful cinematic adventure.
The film is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
