Don’t Come Home Review
Thai mystery series doesn’t waste much time to get to its point – from the first episode, we are greeted by Varee and her young daughter Min, who move to the former’s creepy ancestral home where things aren’t as they seem. Varee is clearly running from an abuse situation and trying her best to cover her tracks so that she is not discovered. The series creates a creepy atmosphere in the first episode, where things seem a little off in the Jarukanant house. Min clearly sees something is amiss, but as with all horror show/movie protagonists, Varee must unsee the obvious in order to pad the runtime as much as possible.
Of course, things soon start to move in a more sinister direction – Min goes missing right inside the house and a police investigation starts as well. Fah, the detective in charge of the case, doesn’t find an evidence of Min’s existence but there’s still something nagging her in the back of her head. The series, in spite of the predictable bits, is able to do a fantastic job of creating an air of suspense surrounding the entire ordeal. You immediately jump to the conclusion that Varee must be having a mental health crisis due to her husband’s abuse. Was her daughter dead all along? Or is there something supernatural at play?

Both Pitchapa Phanthumchinda and Woranuch BhiromBhakdi are fantastic in this series. Storyline aside, Phanthumchinda as Fah, is pretty much no-nonsense and has a healthy air of curiosity to her. She’s not over the top either way and has a sympathetic side to her that makes you want to follow her. She has her own personal life that is given adequate consideration to and isn’t just a one-dimensional character without any deoth. On the other hand, BhiromBhakdi as Varee, is someone you can have sympathy for; she is desperate and scared and plays the role of a scared and grieving mother well.
The series presents some very well-done twists and turns along the runtime and although they seem quite obvious after the fact, it’s added well and thankfully isn’t just another jumpscare. The simplicity of the twists make them effective in such a complicated situation and thus, when the series starts to go off on another direction, it leaves us all shocked. I wasn’t expecting a sci-fi twist here and thus when a shocking twist comes around in episode 4, viewers will be left glued to the screen to get the answer to everything.

Don’t Come Home does a fantastic job of knitting these small points togheter. All the different genres melt together well and will leave you shocked and surprised. It’s a thrilling and emotional ordeal as heartbreak gives way to some bad decisions and these emotional moments and beats are given as much importance as the thriller aspects. With fantastic performances, this Thai thriller is enjoyable and entertaining and will leave you hooked. Do I wish we talked a little bit more about the sci-fi aspect? Sure, but I enjoyed it regardless.

Final Thoughts

This Netflix series is well-made, well-acted and has some great twists that will leave you hooked for answers. It’s not too long that it gets on your nerves and has a good runtime that covers the important points without lagging too much. All in all – thoroughly entertaining.
