Don’t Blame Karma Review Contains No Spoilers
In the Netflix Mexican movie, we meet Sara as a kid who blames her sister for taking all the attention. During her younger sister Lucy’s fifth birthday, Sara blows away all her birthday candles. That’s when Lucy says she will take away all her wishes in life. Since then, bad things have kept happening to Sara, especially in her personal/love life.
Sara grows up believing that her karma towards her sister and her sister’s curse is the reason that she’s so unlucky. A teenage Sara is in love with her best friend Aaron, who also goes away. Years later, Lucy, a successful model, reveals that she’s engaged to singing sensation and rockstar, Aaron.
Sara is taken aback to learn that her childhood crush is engaged to Lucy. Her belief about bad luck keeps getting stronger. Is Sara truly cursed because of her sister? Will she ever get out of it? With all her feelings coming back for Aaron, how will she deal with him marrying Lucy? We get all the answers in the end.

Even though the plot of the movie sounds sad, the tonality is quite light and breezy. The first 20 minutes are chaotic because things are happening so fast in Sara’s life. Sara and Lucy’s parents are also going through major issues. So, she has a lot to deal with.

But one thing where Sara’s luck never goes bad is her work life. She’s a talented fashion designer. Sara’s biggest cheerleader is Lucy. While watching the movie, as viewers, we soon realise that the wrong things happening in Sara’s life are not truly her sister’s fault. It’s an excuse she gives for her luck, for her decisions.
Now that Aaron is in the picture, the chances of her bad luck turning around are high. But only if she wishes to, as he’s her sister’s fiance. The makers didn’t try to complicate the equations and presented anything in an overdramatic format. Even though the ending is predictable, I enjoyed watching the Mexican romantic comedy.
While Sara and Aaron are goofy together, watching Sara and Lucy’s sister bond was truly mesmerising. No one is the villain in the story. It’s good that the makers didn’t take a serious tone in a story about ‘karma’ and ‘bad luck’. The parents’ drama seems quite unnecessary at times.

Actors Aislinn Derbez and Renata Notni are exceptional and stunning as Sara and Lucy. Their sisterly bonding looks natural. They’ve shown how one can blame their sibling for any random thing. But no one can comfort a person as their sibling does. Actor Gil Cerezo as Aaron adds the musical and romantic element to the story. He’s charming throughout. The makers made sure that no boy takes away from the sisters in the Netflix movie.
Don’t Blame Karna aka ¿Qué culpa tiene el karma? Review: Final Thoughts
Overall, Don’t Blame Karma has a good amount of romance, music and humour to keep one intrigued. The movie lacks a bit in the emotional element, especially during the climax. Yet, it’s a feel-good watch that will leave a smile on your face.
Watch the movie on Netflix.
