Agneepath
The 2012 film which is actually the remake of the 1990 movie of the same name literally translates to ‘path of fire’, so how can we not have this list start with this very masterpiece, right? Produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Karan Johar under Dharma Productions and marking Karan Malhotra’s debut as a director, this dharma drama has all the action and thrill to keep you up all night long. It has one of the most memorable performances ever by the cast that includes Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra and will stay with you forever. It is streaming now on Netflix.
Kahaani
Another 2012 film that has the essence of a festival embedded in its screenplay and some mystery that will keep you guessing till the end, the Vidya Balan starrer is nothing less than a gem when it comes to incorporating the mystery thriller genre in its storytelling. Co-written, co-produced and directed by Sujoy Ghosh, the film is about a pregnant woman’s struggle and determination to find her missing husband. The bonus part about watching this film is that there is a stand-alone sequel to it that came out in 2016 and, also has a spin-off series based on one very interesting and quintessential character from the movie (a Diwali bonus from our side!).
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy
Mystery, action and thrill- you will find it all in this detective, whodunnit film. Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, and produced by Banerjee and Aditya Chopra, this film is based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s famous character of the same name. The film has some key historical points to educate the audience as it unearths some horrific pre-independence history. If a period mystery drama is up your sleeve, then this watch is surely going to entertain you. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the titular role, along with Anand Tiwari, Neeraj Kabi and Swastika Mukherjee. It is available now on Amazon Prime Video.
Drishyam Film Series
When it comes to the Drishyam film series, we can’t pick the language because Ajay Devgn’s version is as good as Mohanlal’s version and vice versa and, even Venkatesh Daggubati’s one. This film series packs in action, thriller, and suspense with an impeccable screenplay and an acting masterclass. If you haven’t watched the series yet, let us tell you that you will be giving yourself the gift of cinema this Diwali by diving right into it. Dhoom Franchise
There is nothing more comforting than going back to the world when the Dhoom franchise would make everyone giddy. We feel that the franchise is forgotten in this world when the cop-action thrillers are taking over, one movie a week but, honestly nothing can beat the era of Dhoom (and, yes, we even mean the last film which was rather disappointing in some sense!). The franchise revolves around the journey of ACP Jai Dixit which is played by Abhishek Bachchan and his sidekick Ali Akbar Fateh Khan (played by Uday Chopra) to catch the world-class criminals. There are three films in the franchise all produced by Aditya Chopra. You can watch them all on Amazon Prime Video.
Jawaan
We had to recommend the highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, especially now that you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home! Co-written and directed by Atlee, marking his Hindi film debut, this Shah Rukh Khan blockbuster was a Diwali that came early in theatres and we are not complaining. The best part, of course, is that it is available now on Netflix for everyone to enjoy! The film is a top-notch family entertainer that will make you think about the wrongs and the rights in the world we all live in.
