Designing Miami Review: Luxury Overlaps with Monotony in this New Netflix Show

Designing Miami is another Netflix reality show that is available to stream on the platform starting today. It features interior designers Eilyn Jimenez and Ray Jimenez as prominent power couples, who are invested in renovating luxurious houses while meeting the minute needs of their clients. The show comprises eight episodes in total with an average length of forty minutes each.

The rest of the cast includes the female gang of Sire design, which makes sure to never disappoint their boss. Followed by the alternative team members of Raymond Nicolas based out in Miami, Florida.

In this reality show, two married interior designing professionals dabble their way through luxury home makeovers by remodeling everything from scratch. Much like other reality shows, it attempts to mix the personal lives of the leading couple with their working routine but fails to find the right balance. So much so, that at one point it feels like a superfluous version of an interior designing workshop.

Eilyn Jimenez is a smart and to-the-point creative director of Sire Design, who specializes in aesthetic and minimalist home renovations. She is a boss lady who runs her team of dedicated architects and designers, namely Valentina, Karina, Camila, and Andrea. Apart from her favorite Dominican coffee, she is proud of her Latino heritage, which reflects in each of the episodes.

On the other hand, Ray Jimenez is her competitor husband, who had a recent fallout with a longtime business partner and is currently on his way to starting a solo venture. Steven and Ori are introduced as his temporary help, both of whom he wants to appoint as full-time associates.

Designing Miami Review

Designing Miami first delves into Ray’s side of the family, where Eilyn is teased by her in-laws for not having a child yet. She takes it sportingly at first but also wants Ray to stand behind her decision. Thereby making the baby topic as one the key personal conflict in this reality show.

The chemistry between Eilyn and her girl gang cum employees takes center stage in later episodes. While Ray finds himself aching for a perfect team to reduce the burden of multiple projects.

The show lacks excitement, and the cliffhangers are simply lousy. Although it does a fine job of educating viewers about interior design, the process of renovation becomes repetitive and monotonous. You will find yourself predicting things and eventually getting them right.

Designing Miami Review

The before and after sequence, accompanied by montages of complete makeovers, is one of the few intriguing things about the show. Whereas, the transitions of Miami beaches and Sky Scrapers, underlined with funky music only add to the dullness.

Each episode is a plain reincarnation of the previous one. A smooth introduction to the house, a sudden issue that needs to be dealt with immediately. And a pitch-perfect end where everything falls into place magically.

Netflix’s Designing Miami Review: Final Thoughts

If I had to extract an interesting takeaway, it would be the constant struggle of the power couple to renovate their own dream house. The professionals of Miami are so consumed in the renovation business, that they have no time for their own. Which almost feels like a direct metaphor for how our work ends up consuming our personal ambitions. Maybe it’s an over-analyzed thought, but who doesn’t want to compensate for their Netflix hours with some philosophy?

  1. These people HATE color. I am on episode 5 where Eilyn is getting ready for a photo shoot. The space is another combination of beige on beige on beige. The designer mentions that the client is afraid of color but is it the design team really? Every space looks very similar and surprisingly each one has this oversized chain used as an accessory (both husband and wife).
They, Eilyn and Ray, are supposed to have different tastes but I don’t see it. In the voiceovers the narrator explains about avoiding color. Come on. They are in beautiful, sunny and tropical Miami Beach, lets celebrate that. Also it would be good to have some info on the finance aspect of their business. How much does it cost to have this team come in and design everything. Some of the clients look like average middle class millennials. Where did they get the funds to have someone custom order everything. One last point, there is this rounded beige sofa that looks like it is covered in bath towels and it is also in every space they design. Lets get Joanna Gaines in there and mix it up with some funky thrift store finds and old signage, something to break up the monotony.

  2. This show is a MUST WATCH! Eilyn is so talented and informative in every episode. The girls are all so hard working and it’s so nice to see how everything comes together at the end.
Ray is also so talented and what about that Man cave? WOW! This show represents Latinos 100%! Definitely can’t wait for Season 2!!!!

  3. Lolz, this article found the one person who didn’t love this show. See your therapist, babe. This is the first reality show where the people were genuinely happy and laughing and it had nothing to do with tlaking behind someone’s back. The cattiness was left at home and you even got to see people being not only good partners, friends, family members, but good bosses!!! I found the whole thing refreshing. Look out, Bravo! Turns out you CAN make a successful show with pitting women against each other and making 77% of the show about trying to get a man.

  4. 100% RJ— I got so sick of those other reality shows for all the reasons you stated. This is a refreshing, happy, positive show that reflects Miami’s true cosmopolitan culture, a happy & supportive married couple, and strong work colleagues. More of this please!

  5. I totally disagree with review I am 6 eps in and am hooked as an interior Designer I can tell thar this show is 100% relatable and as you mentioned the struggles and what seem to be at the last moment wheb it all comes together perfectly is exactly how it is for all designers cause the show obviously cant show every single detail but you work your butt off fot that final reveal. Am happy there isnt constant fake drama like some of these other shows and the focus is on the design.

  6. I agree with you ???? percent ????????the best part is No Drama … just working together as a team we need more people like them????????

  7. Who spit in your breakfast? This was such a lowsy review, you could’ve watched it again and actually realized that this show is actually positive and not all drama. Try to be more positive next time and not such a grouch.

  8. Watching this show and how great they do if anyone else comes to me to redesign with Stephen o the team or however he spells his name I will say, goodbye.

  9. really do you think that the shiplap queen do not repeat the same elements over and over, every single house looks the same on every aspect.
But when a minority team work in a versatile and personalize design (even if they use the same monochromatic tones the walls elements , the furniture pieces, the art work, the lighting, etc are different on each design…) people want to kill it …we don’t need drama for a show to be interesting .. I think the show is amazing, the design are great and the team is a fresh positive vibe … this is not selling sunset or any other drama show… The show is exactly what is need it to open the eyes to a more modern design point of view .

  10. I love love this show reason why I binged watched it. Just pure joy and positivity throughout. I love the love they have for each other. Absolutely hooked!!!!

  11. I love this show, it seems genuine, no drama , thank you ! It feels real, not fake like other shows .. it also shows a hardworking team and couple . It depicts Miami beautifully! I love it !

  12. Agree with the other comments here, it’s such a fun show! What a change from the cattiness and fake drama of certain other reality shows. Yes, there were a few pieces of decor or furnishings that were repeated (the chunky chains are killing me) and even though the design style isn’t my personal favorite, it was still beautiful in its style and it was interesting to see it all come together. Above all, it was pleasant to watch, the positivity, the fun loving vibe of all the people make a huge difference and left me smiling. I hope we see more!

  13. Cringe worthy! Are many of the positive comments from family members and friends of a couple? Or the couples PR managers and agents? It’s a specially galling to see so much nouveau Riche over the top design and hopelessly over accessorized advanced in the context of a Hispanic business, especially for the many of us who areHispanic. Dear Eilyn displays a superiority complex belying What Hass to be something a little bit more troubling: how did I really get here? What strings were pulled. Why. How ? With the show, Netflix again demonstrates It’s total lack of understanding what might have real meaning to marginalized audiences who can still afford Netflix. Netflix can’t seem to do anything beyond catering to the rich and famous in Latino world or at least that would be rich and famous. If another Housing show is really needed, and that’s a question, ever thought about doing some sort of real examination of what it would take to produce affordable housing? Especially in marginalized neighborhoods , Some may be even in Miami? It couldn’t possibly cost any more to produce than what it cost for this nonsense!

  14. The designs were not good. I am from greece and that room did not exude mykonos at all. just the first episode was a big downer. so sorry just being hoenst.
