Delicious Review

A German family of four arrive at their French villa in Provence for their summer vacation which soon takes a turn when they accidentally hit a young woman on a country road. They try to cover up the deed and even take her into their house when she comes looking for a job, and she too appears to be helpful to them all. However, her intimate conversations with the family members reveal hidden motives that seek something different, something dangerous. Soon, this trust in her leads the family into unforeseen consequences that shake their lives.

This film is more than what it looks like; it is something that will lead you into a route filled with twists and turns that bring in an eerie feeling that slowly creeps into you. Taking the anti-capitalist drive to the very extreme, this show takes on a horrifying twist when the end slowly draws near. This is the kind of thrill that you are sure to like because I surely have enjoyed every bit of the film and how it presents its ideas.

The performance put together by the cast is truly outstanding, and while Carla Díaz shines as Theodora, Naila Schuberth delivers an unforgettable blow to the audience. But this doesn’t mean that the rest of the cast is just silently sitting there; they beautifully present their roles- from a picture-perfect family with hidden scars and cracks to the anti-capitalists who are ready to “eat the rich” (quite literally).

But while the film is already amazing from the standpoint of how a film should be made, what really strikes me in the end is the message that the film carries. Its anti-capitalist message is very clear and gives us instances where you see the difference between the classes coming together in one frame. However, what leaves me amazed is the way these two sides are presented because, at the end of the film, you don’t find yourself siding with any of them.

Despite the actions of the family and their hidden cracks, they are still going on with their happy lives and aren’t the worst out there. Meanwhile, we know the reason for the actions of Theodora and her friends, but we still can’t see the worst in them either. There is no side to pick in the end and while this feeling stays with you at the end of the film, you are left wondering what is really Black and White.

I am simply amazed by the writing of this film which presents its intended idea so wonderfully while making the audience rethink everything that they have believed until now. The theme is carefully chosen, but what’s even better is the way all scenes unfold in front of us- leaving us horrified and in contemplation.

Netflix’s Ladies First arrives with a provocative premise and a talented cast, but the gender-swap comedy struggles to deliver sharp satire.
