Deep Fake Love Review: Incessant Crying and Unending Sex Make This Unbearable

Deep Fake Love Review: Originally known as Falso Amor, Deep Fake Love is a reality TV series hosted by Spanish presenter Raquel Sánchez-Silva. The series, which uses deep fake technology to test its participants, consists of 8 episodes, with the finale streaming on 13 July 2023 on Netflix, each with a runtime of around 50 minutes.

Deep Fake Love Plot

5 couples test out their love and the strength of their relationship by embarking on a journey driven by AI! The couples are split up and start to share a house with other attractive singles to see whether their original relationships really are that strong or if there is more to learn about their partners. In between that, the show will produce deep-fake images and videos to confuse the participants and force them to choose whether what they are seeing is real or fake. Whoever goes out the other end together will win a grand prize.

Deep Fake Love Review

The moment you start watching Deep Fake Love, you are hit straight across your face with the realisation that maybe these people were promised an acting gig before joining the reality TV show. I am so confused about the contestants – some are engaged to be married and still seem to have such little trust in their partners. It boggles my mind that you can say yes to marrying a person and still not trust them 100%. Like, how are you taking such a big step without being sure of the person you are marrying?

I also don’t understand this insane need for people to try to “test” their partners. It’s like, if you need to test and see whether or not your partner will cheat on you, then the relationship is over anyway. But then again, when they start the show, they cry and confess their love for them in such a way that they don’t have any problems at all. It’s one or the other – you can’t be secure in your relationship and also not trust your partner. I feel like I am stuck in some post-apocalyptic world wherein people just flip-flop with their thoughts surrounding relationships.

Every time another stupid relationship-related Netflix show comes up on Netflix, I am just left astonished as to how absolutely dumb everything is getting. However, I guess you have to remind yourself that this is completely scripted and badly acted, so, you know, there is still some hope left in the world surrounding love and relationships. Either way, it’s the drama that the series tries to drum up that is truly annoying and uncomfortable to watch.

There is a ton of sexual scenes that are just a bit too much. I question anyone who would do this to anyone else; like, there is a scene wherein strangers slather body lotion on each other in the most sexual way possible, and I am not sure why. Like, you are breaking down when your partner is doing something similar, but won’t stop yourself from doing it? I don’t understand the hypocrisy. People talk about connections with those they met 5 minutes ago and are ok “letting themselves go”, throwing away a relationship of a year (or more), and it’s just astonishing.

And this isn’t new to Deep Fake Love either. Other shows (looking at you, The Ultimatum) also run on the same veins and give us the same content packaged in a different wrapper. It’s just so annoying to think that either the creators of such shows don’t care about the content that they are pushing out, or they think that the viewers are stupid enough to enjoy this and not see through the utter crap.

I think I was more interested to know how all of these transgressions are going to blow up in everyone’s faces rather than anything else. And the insanity that takes place in the White Room is both hilarious and embarrassing because the same people who are crying inconsolably on the floor are the same people who go back to the house and make out with others. It’s just that, you don’t feel close to anyone since no one is innocent in this game. It’s just really embarrassing and cringy to watch.

Lastly, Deep Fake Love‘s main selling point is the deep fake twist to a known format. The AI twist is actually quite fun and interesting to watch and, honestly, is the stuff of nightmares. Although sometimes you can make out which video is real and which isn’t, most of the time, it’s pretty seamless and honestly quite impressive. If the twist is something that interests you, then I think the show has something new to offer.

Deep Fake Love Review: Final Thoughts

deep fake love review

Deep Fake Love is a show that gets on your nerves. You’ll be confused about whom to root for and left disappointed that all the contestants are technically (and literally) cheating one way or the other, and thus, watching them bawl their eyes out when their spouses do the same seems hypocritical and cringy. I don’t know what I was expecting from a show that belongs to the romantic/reality TV genre on Netflix, but it definitely wasn’t this. At least the AI part gives you something to think about other than cringy and suggestive scenes.

Deep Fake Love is streaming on Netflix.
