Dear My Light is the latest single by singer-songwriter Kim Hyo-jong who is popularly known by his stage name Dawn (던), under the hip-hop label AT AREA. The music video for the track has also dropped simultaneously. Apart from performing it, the artist also participated in composing and contributing lyrics to the song alongside GroovyRoom, HA:TFELT and Kwaca.
The artist took a rather different route than his typical music releases, which contain heavy rap verses and consists of hip-hop beats. However, the latest track contains a melodic tune along with emotional lyrics that will touch your heartstrings. The soft and mellow song contains a highly contrasting music video. Dawn is seen showcasing scenes depicting melancholy and loneliness through suggestive imaging.
The music video opens with the camera focusing on his eyes that appear from a smoke screen. It quickly shifts to him sitting on a chair in the midst of the smoke wearing what seems to look like a straitjacket. It indicates that he is disturbed and mentally at a bad place in his life. Soon after, he again appears in a wide and empty room, standing in front of a sink with water dripping from his hair that also looks similar to teardrops.
As the song progresses, the scenes change one after another. He is seen walking inside an empty room again, dressed formally to sit on a desk with a mic placed on it, the scene resembles that of a press conference. More visuals to showcase his condition are included, like him lying down on a hospital bed and attached with artificial breathing, which hints that he is functioning on ‘life support’. Thereafter, he is seen running down the hall in an attempt to escape his demons.
However, the lyrics are beautifully written and express his deepest emotions. It mostly talks about a special person in his life who meant a lot to him. Seeing the person happy and dazzling is all he ever wanted. He could sacrifice his own happiness and well-being for the said person’s contentment.
Through the lyrics, it can be speculated that the song is about his ex-girlfriend Hyuna. The artist revealed back in 2018 that he had been in a relationship with Hyuna since 2016. They even announced their engagement in February 2022. However, on November 2022, the couple separated for unknown reasons. The news spread like wildfire and shocked fans and non-fans alike.
