One wonders exactly how important the competition between sections is for the show. For one, it isn’t afforded nearly as much time as the interpersonal relations between students, which is in no way a bad thing. The show even forgoes telling us the scores or the methodology sometimes, which wouldn’t be happening if it cared even a tiny bit about the games that it makes the characters play. At any given moment, the games are just a platform for the development of those relationships and moments.

If you keep this in mind, the show ignoring the paper shuffle as it did should come as no surprise to anyone. Instead, the show chose to focus on something that’s far more important, and deservedly so, Kiyotaka Ayanokoji’s backstory. Ever since the show’s first season, he has developed a cult-like following for his competence in operating from the shadows, alongside being far more dangerous than anyone would give him credit for at first glance. These are desirable characteristics in any anime protagonist, especially one catering to an audience like this show.

However, his motivations for doing what he did and being the way he was were confusing at best and flimsy at worst. There was certainly something terrible that happened in his past that he wanted to escape from, which could very well have been the doing of his father, who wanted to see him expelled in the events of the first season. It was then that he made a deal with his homeroom teacher to get this unholy band of underachievers the show calls Class 1-D into the best position in the entire school- to be the new Class 1-A.

Ayanokoji’s motivations for everything that he had done in the show so far were challenged as an event that rocked the show’s foundations to its core took place- Ayanokoji met the one person he knows holds enough power over him to get him back where he came from, and it wasn’t pretty. We can now see more clearly why Ayanokoji is the way he is, and even though there were hints towards this all over the storytelling and OSTs, it was still nice to see it in front of our eyes. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, that’s for sure.

Classroom Of The Elite Season 2 Episode 10 also resolved a glaring issue that I had with the plot previously, which was Ayanokoji’s motivations for leading Class 1-A being little more than straight-up blackmail. He was never going to give it his best shot if he wasn’t doing it for himself, and it showed. This episode took some big leaps in that particular section of storytelling, and hopefully, the show’s future will be much better off because of this.

Verdict

Classroom Of The Elite Season 2 Episode 10 wasn’t as good as some of the preceding episodes, but it was still an important enough episode to stand out, especially for the main character, Ayanokoji.
