Class of 09 Finale Review: Graduation

The final episode of Class of 09 ends with tension but, gives us enough closure on the relationships we have been following throughout the show. As we saw in the last episode, Tayo has resigned and Warren is in charge now. But, that does not mean he cannot do anything. However, to take a step against the system Tayo needs to come clean about why he preferred the AI in the first place, which he does.

Class of 09 Episode 8 shows us Tayo meeting Poet. Through this meeting, he unwraps his past- how the human justice system was not kind enough towards his father and, the man had to lose his life because he was not equal in society (due to his African-American descent). Tayo wanted to correct this and what better way to make sure justice is served equally but to use a machine that does not ‘think’ but ‘does’.

In the future timeline, it is a regretful decision that Tayo had taken. In fact, to ensure equality he took some steps to safeguard the privileged which is why Amos turned rogue on him. He comes clean about it all, including how his hunger to be powerful and just affected his relationship with Vivienne.

We also get to see why there was a nine-year rift between Poet and Hour. And, if you are guessing it was due to the machine then you are absolutely right. Ultimately though the class, standing in the year 2034, collectively realizes how the machine is doing nobody any good.

Thus, Poet, Tayo, Hour and Lennix team up together to take down the machine. Not in the literal sense, no but, in a more strategic way where they take away the privilege the machine has been serving the high-power officials and make sure it is deemed unfit for use. A machine-oriented mistrial one can say.

Class of 09 Episode 8: Final Thoughts

This was a much-needed finale but, was it intense enough? Well, the topic the show has been dealing with is an intense one in general, so by default, the finale felt that way. However, there were dipping points in the finale that could have made the show anti-climatic but, it did not come through.

In fact, the latest arrests made by the machine in Class of 09 Episode 8 based on ‘thought crimes’ was rather terrifying, so much so that this end felt necessary. Overall, it was a good episode with the right amount of thrill and thought.
