Blood and Gold Review: The World War 2 violence is returning, and things are getting incredibly tense in this new German film. Directed by Peter Thorwarth and written by Stefan Barth, this film stars Robert Maaser, Jördis Triebel, Alexander Scheer, Marie Hacke, Roy McCrerey, Nele Kiper and Stephan Grossmann, alongside other cast members. This film is produced by Christian Becker and Amara Palacios, while Jessica de Rooij and Hendrik Nölle serve as the music producers.
– The Blood and Gold Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –
It is a Netflix staple to release tonnes of content, with only some being gold nuggets. The rest pass by like pebbles. Similarly, while this film doesn’t necessarily do something to offend audiences, and neither is the story too bad, it is just an average look at a specific event from wartime. We know that there is a deserter in this film, so obviously, there will be soldiers and lieutenants running around looking for this person, but there was never any fear because these Nazis couldn’t aim at all.
The main character is running away from a band of soldiers who are all unable to shoot him. Even statistically, it would be probable that he would get shot at least once, or grazed with a bullet. However, since our hero is so intelligent, he manages to swerve around bullets he cannot even see. This is a general theme of the film, where the pursuers continue to miss every shot they take even though it is accurately aimed at the victim. However, this rule seems to disintegrate when they need to fridge a character in order to move the plot forward.
It was exciting to initially see a character with Down’s syndrome in a film like this, but obviously, there has to be some kind of motivation right to see the film. Additionally, we see this one-dimensional take on everyone’s character, like there is only violence and victory but no pain, no suffering, and no actual human feeling. You can tell this is written and directed by a man because there is no depth to the female characters and a monolithic, almost revelatory look at the male characters.

However, we can still say the story is average because the gore was done extremely well. Whoever was in charge of the special effects makeup should get a raise because they were done accurately as well as dramatically, walking the line very well in order to get audiences to enjoy it. It is still infuriating, though, that all of this work to make the film look fantastic visually doesn’t translate to making the film work in theory and technicality.
There is no way actually to enjoy this film because it is boring. It is so average it is boring. The tropes are recycled, there is nothing new left to say, and the plotline is so generic that it might just have been a well, written short story than a 100-minute film. For half the film, there are still expositional bits going on. The structure is not so haywire that it feels like the ending was too rushed, but it does make the rest of the film feel much slower than it should be.
Audiences are given no context, flashbacks, or even some clue as to the history behind the gold and the connection to Jewish people. It must be noted that at least the ownership and its existence were explained well in the movie. However, even then, this gold is almost a secondary character compared to the deserter and his quest to find his daughter. Somehow, this writer feels like that would be a better story than this attempt at protecting the gold.

Blood and Gold Review: Final Thoughts
This writer suggests that people not watch this film unless they are just looking to pass some time at home. While the second world war is a sensitive subject in the Hollywood genre, the German film industry has no qualms about taking up this storyline. They have also inserted some action drama into it to make it more commercialised, but instead, the film just reeks of convenient writing and boring extrapolation.
Clearly, the writers didn’t seem to think through the structure, the characters and the plot. At least something can be said for the attempt at building a back story for these characters, which is where the effort ends here.
Blood and Gold is currently streaming on Netflix.
