We are officially in the Barbenheimer Memes month, and things are brewing seriously. Barbie is a Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach project starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Hellen Mirren, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Scott Evans, Nicola Coughlan and Ritu Arya, alongside other cast members.
On the other hand, Oppenheimer is a Christopher Nolan project starring Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Gustaf Skarsgård, David Dastmalchian, Gary Oldman, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck, Scott Grimes, Alex Wolff, James D’Arcy, Josh Peck, Dane DeHaan, David Krumholtz and Jack Quaid, alongside other cast members. The film is about the man credited with creating the atomic bomb and his personal and professional struggles leading up to the test.
The Gerwig film is about the iconic toy every person played with and her existential crisis in a world where everything and everyone is perfect. When certain things don’t go the way she wants, the protagonist starts wondering whether there is something in the real world that might be causing this problem in the first place. Meanwhile, the Nolan film is an extremely serious look at the character, with changing colour gradings and perspectives.
Both of these films have created their own headlines for the most outrageous things, including the fact that there was a pink paint shortage because of the intense set pieces, an actual explosion instead of employing CGI and finally, the stars of Barbie going to watch both Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible as a way to market the films. If you speak to anyone, they will tell you that everything they found out about this was against their own will, and they love it.
But so far, everything about the public response has been hilarious. They have been pairing stills from the two films together, the monochrome against the pink; they have been sharing popular characters from shows and movies, attributing either of the films to them. At the same time, others have shared how deep the Barbenheimer lore has gotten. When even random closet-sorting videos become grounds for this distinction.
