Almost Cops Review: Entertaining But Cliched

Almost Cops Review: In this buddy comedy film, a dedicated special investigator is forced to team up with a reckless demoted ex-cop to hunt down a dangerous killer. What starts off chaotically results in a lasting dream team being formed and a shocking truth that unearths deep secrets.

Almost Cops Review

The cop buddy comedy genre is not my favourite thing to watch, but Netflix’s Almost Cops is a surprisingly pleasant and can be entertaining at times as well. The film follows the chaotic but positive Ramon and his new partner, a stoic ex-cop Jack, as they try to figure out the murder of someone close to them. The film’s premise is extremely thin, but it still works thanks to the lead pair’s on-screen bromance and some of the comedic elements.

Almost Cops is fun if you don’t think too deeply. Of course, considering there’s not much here to think about anyway, it doesn’t present many opportunities to think about either. The film rushes from one thing to the next and doesn’t set up the emotional components that make a family or friend’s murder devastating, and turns people onto the path of revenge. Thus, Kevin’s murder feels sudden and half-baked because we don’t know him, and we don’t know the dynamic that he shares with Jack and Ramon.

This makes the film and the eventual path of revenge surface-level and the exploration of grief vaguely relatable but not impactful. That being said, the film doesn’t require this much thought, which is fine. I found myself thoroughly amused at the humour, which is quite the slapstick annoyance that you’d expect from it. It’s just that it feels genuine in this movie, and it doesn’t just feature too much screaming.

Ramon and his team are termed as chaotic from the very first, even called toddlers at some point, which the film proves time and time again. You are prepared for the stupidity to flow, and it makes you chuckle more often than not. The film hinges on Jandino Asporaat and Werner Kolf’s friendship and relationship, and they do a good job with that. Ultimately, Almost Cops is fun and entertaining for a light-hearted watch, but it’s forgettable in the end.

Almost Cops is exactly what you’d expect – a fun, forgettable romp that doesn’t rise above the cliches of the buddy cop genre. However, at least it’s entertaining and even funny sometimes, and that’s all that we can hope for at this point.
