A Tourist’s Guide to Love Trailer Breakdown
A Tourist’s Guide to Love explores the familiar romance trope of a love triangle with the vacation romance aspect in tow. The trailer shows us Amanda Riley at her job as a travel executive when her boyfriend, John, calls her to tell her that she should come home early. The next shot shows us the couple making their way to the couch with two glasses of wine. She thinks she is about to get proposed to for sure. Since this is a romance movie, and it is just the beginning, there is no way he is actually proposing.
That is when he drops the bomb that he is moving to Ohio. This unexpected breakup shakes up all her plans and changes her future trajectory. All her plans are now dangling by a fraying thread. We can see that she is stressing about this situation when it starts affecting her behaviour at work. She is irritated about being put on hold; right now, that is another thing she cannot control. In a classic rom-com fashion, her boss asks her to leave town, sending her on an assignment to Vietnam.
The next few shots give us some context as to what Vietnam looks like and what Amanda is supposed to do. She has taken the help of a local tour guide named Sinh, who is assisting her in learning about the tourist industry in the country. He has a different outlook when it comes to sightseeing. When she is reading her guidebook, he asks her to close it because she isn’t a tourist, she’s a traveller. Their blossoming friendship becomes deeper with this sentence, and they continue to engage in travel and adventures together.

Amanda is having fun exploring the city, taking it all in. The traffic, the greenery and the new tourists who are also visiting the country. This leads her to explore certain forgotten places and sites that would be perfect to see alone. This trip wasn’t just about getting her mind off her ex-boyfriend but also about finding her personality without him. She has been sharing this with Sinh, who hangs on to her every word like he could never stop listening to her.
Once again, the emotional vulnerability that she brings to the acquaintanceship changes the dynamic of their relationship. Amanda’s boss is all in on their vacation romance. She wants to know all the details about him. Amanda keeps all she knows about him on the down low. Most of all, her boss wants to know how good-looking he is. Amanda admits she has been thinking about him as a romantic partner. However, she is afraid that he might remain a vacation romance and nothing more.
There are intertwining storylines, exploring Sinh’s backstory but also the city in a new way. The film shows how one person can change how we look at life and love differently. Here’s where the breaks screech because John is back in Vietnam to surprise her, and now there is this extra tension with both Sinh and him in the same vicinity. Even though things are extremely comfortable with John, she feels like she would be slipping back if she went back to him.
Amanda has an important choice to make now. Does she continue to see John, choose her vacation romance or say goodbye to both of them for good and remember them as fleeting formative experiences? The only way to find out is to catch the film on Netflix.
