The manga series appeared in Kodansha’s Dessert magazine in December 2017, and there are 14 volumes as of November 2023. An anime adaptation of the series is coming out in April 2024, and it’s produced by East Fish Studio.

The anime series will feature Sexy Zone’s “Kimi no Sei” (“It’s Your Fault”) as its opening theme song, and Mina Okabe’s Japanese version of “Every Second” as the ending theme song.

Episode 1 of A Condition Called Love can also be called the 1st episode of Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai (花野井くんと恋の病).

I have tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I had to mention to give proper feedback.

A Condition Called Love Episode 1 Review and Recap – Hotaru’s First Love

A Condition Called Love Episode 1 Review Another Promising Romance Anime Is Here!

Another Shoujo manga adaptation is here for this season, and it certainly delivered a good episode right off the bat. What sets this anime apart from every other shoujo anime is how relatable the heroine is in here. The female protagonist of this story is Hotaru, who can be considered a plain Jane with no interest in love. It’s not like she looks down upon love it’s just that she is very realistic about the work that gets into complimenting a difficult emotion like love, and hence, she would like to stay clear of it.

In that place, she prioritises her friends and family more and would not want to give up on them just for the sake of finding a life partner. A comment that she makes about how it is difficult to even remember the people in her own class, let alone remember someone from the class beside her, is such a relatable comment for so many introverted girls who passed their school days without much intensity.

But Hotaru’s life changes for the better when she encounters the break-up of the most handsome guy in her school. And the break up is an embarrassing mess as she literally sees his girlfriend pour water over his head in a cafe. That experience surely awakened a sense of pity in her heart, making her comfort Hananoi later, when she saw him sitting outside under the snow.

However, what she did not know was how this one single act of kindness would make this man fall head over heels for her. Things become complicated for Hotaru because she definitely has zero experience in relationships, and having the love of Hananoi, who is so sought after, is pretty taxing. And did I mention that he is a bit extreme in his affection? He is the personification of the saying, ‘If He Wanted to, He Would’. But well, one thing is for sure, Hotaru, who is not that affectionate, might be the perfect lady for Hananoi, who is a bit too devoted for his own good.

Verdict

Today’s episode pretty nicely introduces the character dynamics and gives us an idea of how the relationship can go in the future. The animation is decent, and the background music also complements the scenes well. The opening and the ending themes are pretty nice, but I preferred the ending more than the opening. If you are craving a heart-thumping romance anime where the introvert finally lands the most handsome boy, you should definitely check this out.
